Job Description

Our client a progressive insurance broker is seeking a candidate for their General Counsel and Director of Government Affairs role. The individual in this role will be responsible for overseeing all legal matters and managing government relations for the association. This role provides strategic legal guidance ensures regulatory compliance and represents the association in legislative and regulatory matters. The position reports directly to the CEO & Executive Director and serves as a key advisor to the executive team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Legal Oversight & Compliance

  1. Strategically plan organize and oversee all legal affairs for the association ensuring compliance with applicable laws and industry regulations.
  2. Manage legal risk providing counsel on governance contracts compliance and regulatory matters.
  3. Review draft and negotiate contracts agreements and other legal documents to safeguard the associations interests.
  4. Ensure broker compliance with state and federal regulations industry standards and internal policies.
  5. Maintain select filings ensuring timely submission of required regulatory documents.
  6. Oversee cybersecurity compliance efforts working closely with IT and regulatory bodies to ensure adherence to data protection laws and best practices.

Government Affairs & Legislative Advocacy

  1. Develop and execute government relations strategies representing the associations interests in legislative and regulatory matters.
  2. Monitor analyze and influence legislation and regulations impacting the association and the industry.
  3. Lead engagement with regulatory bodies trade associations and legislative organizations including:
    • NCOIL (National Council of Insurance Legislators)
    • NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners)
    • Other relevant governmental and industry organizations.
  4. Build and maintain strong relationships with policymakers legislators and industry stakeholders to advocate for the associations positions and priorities.

Communication & Education

  1. Prepare review and publish key compliance communications including:
  • Bulletins
  • Compliance advisories
  • Industry updates
  • Newsletter items
  • Regulatory guidance
  1. Advise on legal implications of website and social media content ensuring all communications align with regulatory standards and industry best practices.
  2. Design and implement Continuing Education (CE) courses ensuring members remain informed and compliant with evolving industry standards.

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate and liaise with internal teams external counsel and regulatory authorities on complex compliance matters.
  2. Provide strategic legal guidance to the CEO Board of Directors and senior leadership on critical legal and regulatory issues.
  3. Stay current on industry trends legal developments and regulatory changes proactively identifying risks and opportunities for the association.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned supporting the organizations evolving needs and strategic objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active Bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in legal counsel roles preferably within the insurance financial services or regulatory sectors.
  • Proven expertise in government affairs regulatory compliance and legislative advocacy.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance law broker compliance and cybersecurity regulations.
  • Exceptional communication negotiation and leadership skills.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies (e.g. NAIC NCOIL) and industry trade associations.
  • Ability to work in a fastpaced environment managing multiple priorities with a high level of professionalism and integrity.
  • There will be some light travel.

Salary Range: $290000.00 $325000.00 Annually
