The ideal candidate will plan, develop, coordinate and implement public health education programs in the WIC program for nutrition and breastfeeding education for women, infants and children under the general direction of the WIC Coordinator/Nutrition Supervisor. This includes public health messaging campaigns, health communications, and direct client services regarding nutrition and breastfeeding, staff education, individual and group nutrition and breastfeeding counseling, professional consultation, and information dissemination related to public health; and to perform related duties as required.
This position class is assigned to the Public Health division of the Health and Human Services Agency. An incumbent in this classification will be required to perform a wide variety of health information and education activities within assigned program area(s) requiring the application of core principles and methods of public health, prevention, and health promotion.
Develop, implement, and evaluate WIC outreach plans to ensure community awareness of program benefits and to meet caseload participation goals.
Develop and coordinate outreach events and in-service training for departmental staff and community agencies to forward WIC nutrition education.
Assist with the provision of direct educational services; provides services such as presentations and trainings to community coalitions and other groups.
Understand the social determinants of health/health equity and how these factors play a role in achieving community health.
Determine and document applicant or participant eligibility.
Identify participant s nutrition risks, needs, and concerns through a complete nutrition assessment.
Provide participant-centered individual and group nutrition and breastfeeding education.
Issue and tailor food packages appropriately.
Assess need for and provide referrals and follow up to health care providers, public health nurses and other agencies.
Develop and document initial individual nutrition education and follow up plans for high-risk participants.
Assist with the provision of medically necessary formulas and/or foods for WIC participants
Select and issue appropriate food packages.
Provide breastfeeding support and assistance.
Travel to satellite WIC clinics to provide WIC services to eligible Napa County residents.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
A Bachelors degree with major coursework in health education, community health, social services or a closely related field.
A Bachelor s or Masters degree in nutrition with a focus on maternal and child health is highly desirable.
Two (2) years of experience in health education or planning, public health, mental health, co-occurring disorders, substance abuse prevention, or a closely related field preferred.
Possession of a valid California Drivers License.
