The JCFS (Japan Customer Fulfillment Solutions) JP Robotics Software & Control Engineering team is responsible for developing and maintaining software and machine control software for material handling systems at Amazon Japans Fulfillment Centers (FCs). The team designs implements deploys and operates software solutions for robotics and automation systems operating within FC environments across Japan.
This position leads the development of software for robotics and automation systems within FCs. The scope includes multiple major programs such as next-generation automated robot systems automation systems from picking to consolidation and packing automation infrastructure for same-day delivery and software PLC control platforms. Working in collaboration with Amazons global teams you will design implement deploy and operate software solutions tailored for Japans FCs.
The ideal candidate for this position possesses strong technical foundations in software engineering and control systems demonstrates ownership across the entire software development lifecycle and thrives at the intersection of cloud computing and large-scale warehouse automation. This role requires collaboration with global teams distributed across multiple time zones. Based on global architecture and Japan-specific requirements you will build consensus with global technical stakeholders and drive design and development.

Robotics & Automation Control Software Development (60%)
Design and develop software for robotics and automation systems operating within FC environments. Target systems include multiple types of equipment such as automated conveyance devices automated picking devices automated labeling devices automated packing machines and robots. Develop and modify Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Warehouse Control Systems (WCS) as well as design and implement integration interfaces with various equipment. Drive software development on AWS and edge computing environments. Execute design implementation deployment and operations processes maintaining product quality above established standards.
Collaboration with Global Teams (20%)
Collaborate with global software teams in Seattle Boston and Toronto. Based on global architecture and Japan-specific requirements build consensus with global technical stakeholders and drive design and development. Depending on project characteristics drive development through co-development with global teams or by directly contributing to global team codebases.
Security and Quality Management (10%)
Practice secure development in compliance with JCFS Application Development Security Guidelines. Contribute to system reliability improvement by conducting design and security reviews and maintain system operational stability including on-call response.
AI Utilization and Technical Innovation (10%)
Drive efficiency improvements in software development through the use of AI/ML tools. Contribute to building and standardizing control logic and perform software verification using simulation technologies.

The JCFS JP Robotics Software & Control Engineering team is a cross-functional engineering team based in Tokyo and Osaka. It develops operates and maintains software for material handling systems robotics platforms and automation solutions deployed across Amazon Japans FCs nationwide. Team members work across a broad range of technical areas including embedded control systems edge computing cloud platforms and large-scale distributed systems.
The team operates in close partnership with Amazons globally distributed engineering organization. Engineers on the team contribute to both system deployment at Japans Fulfillment Centers and the development of global platforms. They play a bidirectional role: applying insights gained from Japans operational sites to global design and development and adapting global architectures to Japans environment.
- 3 years of practical software development experience (excluding internships)
- 2 years of practical experience in system design or architecture (design patterns reliability scaling) for new and existing systems (excluding internships)
- Development experience in one or more programming languages including Java
- Practical experience in project execution including technical specification negotiation and consensus building with external vendors
- Business-level communication skills in both Japanese and English
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science Electrical Engineering or a related field
- 5 years of practical experience across the entire software development lifecycle including coding standards code reviews source control build processes testing and operations
- Experience in design and development of control system software including PLC device drivers and BIOS
- Cloud application development experience utilizing various AWS services
- Software development experience in robotics or automation systems
- Knowledge of material handling systems or logistics systems
- Masters degree in Computer Science Electrical Engineering or a related field
