Join a diverse dynamic and enthusiastic team of environmental professionals who play a leading role in environmental permitting and compliance at Amazon Web Services (AWS). The work of our Regional Environmental Engineers is critical to enabling AWSs growth in Ireland and across the EMEA region.
The AWS Environmental team is an expanding and dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWSs growth around the world as well as ensuring compliance of AWSs global operations including physical data centres and other AWS facilities. The team has responsibility for architecting and implementing AWSs environmental programmes including defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems; setting and refining policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards tools auditing and metrics; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and effective compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
You will partner with AWS stakeholders to develop regional and site-specific development strategies enabling the design construction and operation of AWS data centres and infrastructure in Ireland. You will lead environmental due diligence for site selection and acquisition develop and execute regional and site-specific environmental permitting strategies (with a predominant focus on Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) licensing here in Ireland) support environmental compliance during design and construction and prepare for data centre operations. This role requires regular engagement throughout the development lifecycle with multiple AWS stakeholders including Real Estate Legal Risk Water Design Public Policy Construction and Operational teams as well as external stakeholders including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) local authorities An Coimisiún Pleanála consultants and contractors.
A successful candidate in this role will have a proven track record of delivering multiple high-priority projects with tight timelines that require strong communication with partner teams outside consultants and counsel and regulatory agencies. The candidate must have a strong understanding of Irish and EU environmental permitting licensing and compliance requirements associated with large-scale infrastructure with particular experience in Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) licensing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Appropriate Assessment (AA) and planning consent processes.


Key job responsibilities
Support the delivery of environmental permitting and licensing workstreams on data centre projects including Industrial Emissions Licence (IEL) applications to the EPA Environmental Impact Assessment Reports (EIAR) EIA screening Appropriate Assessment (AA) and other environmental inputs to planning applications.
Assess environmental risks and requirements and develop mitigations and strategies to support data centre development strategies and site-specific project delivery.
Implement technical aspects of environmental due diligence including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments regulatory and permitting evaluations natural and ecological resource evaluations noise assessments and air quality assessments.
Deliver environmental permits licences approvals and plans to enable on-time and compliant construction and operations for new data centre locations and expansion of existing sites.
Manage post-consent environmental compliance obligations including licence conditions monitoring reporting and follow-up actions prior to sites becoming operational.
Communicate environmental requirements risks and activities to internal and external project partners.
Coordinate with partner teams including Real Estate Design Water Legal Risk Power Public Policy and others to optimise site designs considering natural resource or operational constraints to ensure future build out remains environmentally compliant.
Develop site development and permitting strategies that are environmentally responsible and sustainable while meeting project timelines.
Lead regulatory agency interactions and negotiations with the EPA local authorities and An Coimisiún Pleanála in support of environmental licence and permit acquisition and regional development strategies.
Lead consultation and engagement with key external stakeholders and statutory authorities as required on projects.
Procure and manage external environmental consultants and review technical inputs to environmental consenting documentation.
Develop detailed compliance plans for environmental licences and permits as sites go live.
Develop manage and track metrics to evaluate project success and compliance status.
Maintain involvement in relevant industry working groups; keep expert knowledge of environmental consenting related legislation and key legal judgements and advise on these to inform AWS planning strategy in Ireland.
Provide strategic environmental consenting expertise for data centre development across AWS projects programmes and portfolios in Ireland.


- Knowledge of critical data center equipment
- Level 8 (Honours Bachelors Degree) in Environmental Science Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years relevant experience delivering multi-media environmental due diligence permitting/licensing and compliance for large-scale complex infrastructure projects.
- In-depth knowledge and experience of the IED licensing process including preparation and management of Industrial Emissions Licence (IEL) applications.
- Strong understanding of Irish and EU environmental regulatory requirements related to consenting for major infrastructure projects including EIA Directive Habitats Directive Birds Directive Air Quality Standards and Water Framework Directive.
- At least 3 years of project or task management experience for environmental permitting licensing and/or due diligence projects.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and project manage large multi-disciplinary projects.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively at all levels and deliver high-quality outcomes.
- Strong stakeholder management skills with a proven track record of managing internal and external stakeholders and leading successful regulatory engagements and public consultations.
- Understanding and knowledge of prevailing and upcoming Irish and EU environmental and planning legislation.
- Full drivers licence and flexibility to travel within Ireland and occasionally within the EMEA region.

- Level 9 (Masters Degree) in Environmental Science Environmental Engineering or equivalent.
- Data centre or critical infrastructure due diligence design construction and/or risk assessment experience strongly preferred.
- Experience in IED licensing for combustion plant / back up generator fleet operations.
- Experience with Medium Combustion Plant (MCP) Regulations and associated com
- Chartered status (e.g. CIWEM IES or equivalent professional body).
- Project management qualification (e.g. PMP PRINCE2 or equivalent).
- Experience of environmental regulatory requirements in other EU/UK jurisdictions.
- Experience with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
