Trainee Designer (Design & Drafting Technician)

Job Description

Overview

Creates detailed technical drawings from engineer inputs supports design development for substations transmission projects ensures standards compliance and prepares construction as-built drawings using tools like AutoCAD.

Your role

• Translate engineering sketches and markups into properly documented drawings including schematics wiring diagrams AC & DC single-line diagrams arrangement drawings structure/assembly drawings plans and profiles route maps foundations and grounding systems for substations and transmission lines including plan and elevation views using predefined standards
• Assist engineers on projects by converting preliminary design drawings into detailed designs
• Ensure all drawings are produced in accordance with applicable drafting codes and standards
• Support engineers and project teams in preparing and assembling Issued for Construction (IFC) documents and drawing packages
• Provide information and assistance to engineers throughout the project for approvals and sign-off
• Review and assess field construction markups to develop as-built drawing packages
• Attend occasional project site visits to gather design details as required

About you

• Drafting diploma from a recognized technical institute or equivalent work experience
• Minimum of 1-3 years of strong drafting experience in high-voltage transmission and distribution substation physical layout and section drawings
• Proficient in AutoCAD MicroStation and Microsoft Office; knowledge of Inventor or Revit is an asset
• Knowledge of PLS CADD or similar design software is an asset
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to manage competing priorities and time effectively
• General knowledge of electrical and civil design
