Senior Software Engineer-Android & Backend Systems

This role will help define design build and maintain software solutions which advance developer effectiveness at Toast and provide a world-class experience to engineers across the business.

Toast is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Cash & Close and Shift Review team in India. Youll help build products that enable restaurants to reconcile sales manage cash-handling workflows review shift performance and gain operational insights across Toasts ecosystem.

About this roll* (Responsibilities)

• Work collaboratively with UX PM QA and other engineers to build and enhance Android applications and supporting backend services.
• Ensure quality through automated testing code reviews and engineering best practices.
• Participate in the full software development lifecycle from design and prototyping to deployment and maintenance.
• Ensure the robustness performance and reliability of Android applications and backend systems.
• Contribute to API design and service integrations that power Cash & Close and Shift Review workflows.
• Work closely with technical leads to identify and deliver high-impact customer and business outcomes.
• Make sound technical decisions and recommendations that support long-term product and platform goals.
• Stay in tune with customer needs by participating in user interviews research and feedback sessions.
• Roll* features out to customers including monitoring production health and measuring success.
• Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews design discussions and knowledge sharing.

Do you have the right ingredients* (Requirements)

• 6 years of experience developing and maintaining Android applications.
• Highly proficient in native Android development using Kotlin.
• Experience designing building or integrating backend services and APIs.
• Strong understanding of software design testing and engineering best practices.
• Experience working with distributed systems microservices or cloud-based architectures is a plus.
• Passionate about making users happy and seeing people use your product in the wild.
• Excellent cross-team communication skills on technical topics.
• Growth mindset with an emphasis on learning and continuous improvement.

Our Tech Stack

Toasts products run on a stack that ranges from guest and restaurant-facing Android tablets to backend services in Java to internal guest-facing and restaurant-facing web apps. Our backend services follow a microservice architecture written using Java 8 and DropWizard; we use AWS extensively ranging from S3 to RDS to Lambda. We have our own platform for dealing with user management service elevations and robust load balancing. Toast stores data in a set of sharded Postgres databases and utilises Apache Spark for large-scale data workloads including query and batch processing. The front-end is built primarily using React and ES6. The main Toast POS application is an Android application written in Java and Kotlin. For data between tablets and our cloud platform we operate RabbitMQ clusters as well as direct tablet communication to the back end.
