About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior NZ Accountant to manage New Zealand accounting taxation and compliance activities. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical accounting knowledge hands-on experience with NZ tax regulations and the ability to manage client relationships professionally.
This role requires expertise in preparing financial statements handling tax compliance managing statutory requirements and ensuring timely delivery of client engagements with high accuracy and quality.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Statements & Tax Compliance
Prepare annual financial statements for:
Sole Traders
Rental Property Owners
Companies
Trusts
Prepare and lodge NZ income tax returns including IR3 IR4 IR6 and IR7.
Prepare GST returns and reconcile GST accounts.
Review trial balances and general ledgers for accuracy and completeness.
Identify tax planning opportunities and raise them with senior staff.
Ensure compliance with NZ accounting and taxation standards.
2. Company & Statutory Compliance
Prepare and file Annual Company Returns.
Maintain and update Companies Office records.
Update shareholding director and company details when required.
Ensure all statutory and regulatory filings are completed within deadlines.
3. Client Service & Communication
Communicate professionally with clients regarding:
Information requests
Compliance deadlines
Queries and clarifications
Build and maintain long-term client relationships.
Provide timely responses and high-quality client support.
Escalate complex accounting or taxation matters to senior accountants or directors when required.
4. Systems & Process Management
Use accounting software efficiently including:
Xero
SuiteFiles
IRD systems
Maintain accurate client records and working papers.
Follow internal compliance and quality control procedures.
Assist in improving internal workflows and templates.
5. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Timely completion of assigned jobs.
Accuracy of financial statements and tax returns.
Minimal rework or corrections.
Client satisfaction and retention.
Compliance with filing deadlines.
Effective workload management.

Proficiency in accounting software (Xero preferred).

Qualification Requirements
Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field.
45 years of experience in NZ Accounting and Taxation.
Experience working with NZ-based clients will be an added advantage.
Required Skills:
Minimum Requirements A commerce/ accounting graduate or Inter C.A with 2-5 years of experience working in KPO or with a chartered accountant firm. Good accounting knowledge. Ability to manage direct communication with client.
