Job Description

The consultant will be required to conduct quantitative analysis using an analytical approach that permits to a) demonstrate efficiency of a particular climate smart agricultural or climate information services intervention relative to the alternatives, including the status quo, b) allow for a direct comparison between two groups in a randomized control trial setting in order to measure the effectiveness of a new agro-food production interventions (such as insurance packages) at the farm level. She/he will participate in integrated biophysical and economic modelling, aimed at a comprehensive sustainability assessment. The consultant will also be expected to contribute to the development of cost-benefit analysis methodology for evaluating the impacts of policies and innovations at the household level that are aimed at improving resilience of smallholder farmers livelihood to risks and shocks associated with climate change.


Work Task for the consultant

o Conduct literature review on agricultural risks and adaptation opportunity assessment associated with CSA practices for specific agricultural value chain commodities that are of interest to AICCRA, ARM-CLIM, and partners collaborating with ABC

o Contribute to the development of CSA profiles for selected agricultural value chain commodities in close collaboration with the stakeholders in developing countries or sub-national interventional areas that are of interest to ABC,

o Provide support in gathering data from different sources (including desktop review, stakeholder interviews, focus group discussions and prioritization workshops) as may be required to develop CSA profiles in selected countries in East Africa

o Develop infrastructure supporting data repositories that will ensure the exposure and reuse of open socio-economic data sets

o Provide support for the collation of secondary data on cost and benefits associated with the implementation of specific CSA/CIS practices for specific agricultural value chain commodities in developing countries

o Contribute to the development of recommendation of potential coping and adaptation strategies for the selected agricultural value chain commodities

o Take lead in the development of policy briefs, blogs, research articles and workshops presentations related to the CSA profile work.

o Support the development of a cost-benefit analyses methodology tailored toward the analysis of CSA and CIS practices to establish their investment viability

o Take a lead in conducting lab-in-the-field experiments to test incentives for climate-smart agricultural technologies diffusion through social learning and to assess intra-households dynamics

The successful candidate will be required to

o Have completed an M.Sc in Agricultural economics, agricultural and applied economics, development economics or related discipline (). Having enrolled on a PhD program in agricultural economics, economics, development economics or related discipline () will be an added advantage.

o Have completed an M.Sc degree at least 2 years at the time of accepting the position (excluding maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service).

o Have an in-depth and pragmatic understanding of the theory of microeconomics, and experience of constructing and applying mathematical and economic models, e.g., firm-level, partial or general equilibrium.

o Be highly committed to science and capable of conducting independent research in the appropriate field of the position.

o Have good collaboration skills.

o Provide strong evidence of writing research reports and scientific publishing.

o Possess experience in planning and managing research projects and stakeholder engagement through, e.g., participatory foresight methods are appreciated.

o Possess experience in conducting lab-in-the-field experiments for assessing intra-house-holds dynamics

o Possess experience in economic modelling as well as expertise related to any of the programming packages such as GAMS, R, Matlab, statistics

o Possess an in-depth understanding of resilience and climate change.
