Job Summary

The lead power control / SW engineer will lead control software embedded firmware and system integration for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) products including PCS/inverter controls EMS/BMS interfaces SCADA integration protection logic diagnostics and critical power operating modes. This role translates system and customer requirements into reliable software architecture control requirements communication interfaces validation plans and release criteria to support safe efficient and compliant BESS operation. The engineer will work with power electronics system architecture battery engineering test manufacturing quality suppliers and customers to deliver high-performance BESS platforms for commercial industrial utility-scale microgrid and critical power applications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead BESS power control and software activities including PCS/inverter controls EMS/BMS interfaces SCADA integration protection logic diagnostics and critical power operating modes.
• Define control requirements for charge/discharge operation grid-following and grid-forming behavior reactive power frequency response black start readiness fault ride-through anti-islanding safe shutdown and system recovery.
• Develop and review software architecture state machines control sequences communication mapping alarms diagnostics cybersecurity requirements configuration management and release readiness criteria.
• Establish critical coding expectations including modular design coding standards traceability version control code review unit testing static analysis integration testing HIL/SIL validation cybersecurity review and release control.
• Integrate BESS software with PCS BMS EMS SCADA site controllers meters protection relays HVAC fire safety interfaces and customer or utility control systems.
• Plan and support software verification and validation including requirements-based testing regression testing HIL/SIL testing FAT/SAT commissioning support grid compliance testing and field issue troubleshooting.
• Partner with suppliers customers test labs and cross-functional teams to improve system performance reliability and launch readiness.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Technical Knowledge & Skills

• Strong understanding of BESS control architecture including PCS/inverter controls EMS/BMS coordination SCADA integration site controllers protection logic grid services and critical power operating modes.
• Solid experiences developing or specifying embedded software firmware PLC logic EMS logic or supervisory control software for power electronics energy storage UPS microgrid renewable energy or industrial automation systems.
• Hands-on knowledge of critical software practices including C/C Python IEC 61131-3 PLC languages MATLAB/Simulink model-based design modular architecture version control requirements traceability code review unit testing static analysis regression testing and release control.
• Familiar with software quality and safety practices such as MISRA C awareness secure coding cybersecurity review functional safety concepts FMEA/DFMEA support configuration management defect tracking and requirements-based verification.
• Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as CAN Modbus TCP/RTU IEC 61850 DNP3 MQTT OPC UA Ethernet/IP RS-485 TCP/IP and PCS/BMS/EMS/SCADA interfaces.
• Strong understanding of control functions for charge/discharge scheduling active/reactive power control frequency response voltage support ramp-rate control peak shaving islanding black start readiness fault ride-through alarms diagnostics and fail-safe operation.
• Experience with simulation test and development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink PLECS PSIM PSCAD Python Git Jira requirements management tools HIL platforms and protocol analyzers.
• Working knowledge of BESS and grid-related requirements including UL 9540 UL 1741 IEEE 1547 IEC 61850 IEC 62477 IEC 61000 NEC awareness NERC CIP awareness and regional grid interconnection requirements.

Education & experience requirements

• Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Control Engineering Computer Engineering Software Engineering Power Electronics Power Systems Automation or a related technical field is required.
• Masters degree or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline is preferred especially with emphasis on control systems embedded software power electronics controls power systems grid-connected converters automation or energy storage systems.
• Typically requires 5 years of hands-on experience in embedded software firmware controls engineering EMS/SCADA integration inverter controls PLC programming BESS integration critical power systems or related engineering roles.
• Experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems PCS/inverter controls UPS microgrids renewable energy solar plus storage EV charging industrial automation data center power or utility-scale energy systems is strongly preferred.
