The Role

As a Principal Engineer Application Platforms in CTO Platform Engineering & Architecture youll shape technical strategy and provide architecture oversight for next-generation application and AI platforms. The role focuses on accelerating time-to-market for a major platform while improving resilience and reducing operational overhead through integrated controls and open-source solutions. Youll play a key role in progressing Kubernetes-as-a-Service (KaaS) by defining target architectures setting technical direction and aligning plans across multiple teams. Youll act as the senior technical authority for early product onboarding ensuring solutions are production-ready from day one across security resilience performance and operability. Success means consistent platform patterns across delivery teams faster safer releases and reduced rework and operational risk. Youll also partner closely with developer platform teams to deliver coherent integration and a joined-up developer experience. The outcomes support application rewrite and decommissioning programmes reduced run-the-bank (RTB) cost and platform capability integration across estates.

What youll be doing

• Shape platform standardisation and simplification aligned to strategic objectives including application rewrite and decommissioning duplication reduction and RTB efficiency
• Provide technical direction across the organisation aligned to platform strategy engineering standards and a consistent developer experience
• Define and own reference architectures designs technical roadmaps and golden paths for onboarding workloads to KaaS
• Embed an open-source-based engineering stack ensuring reference patterns and platform capabilities integrate cleanly and sustainably
• Establish reusable engineering patterns components and reference implementations to improve delivery speed and consistency
• Accelerate KaaS and related hosting products by setting key technical decisions removing architectural constraints and aligning delivery across multiple teams
• Establish non-functional requirements as enforceable engineering guardrails such as policy-as-code secure-by-default templates and automated compliance evidence
• Govern early product onboarding as senior technical authority ensuring production readiness and proportionate technical governance while reducing rework risk

What were looking for

• Bring significant experience operating as a Principal Engineer or senior technical authority in large-scale enterprise environments
• Demonstrate hands-on platform engineering experience delivering shared services used by multiple product and application teams
• Apply deep Kubernetes and container platform expertise including multi-tenant design cluster operations security controls and reliability considerations for KaaS
• Establish production readiness across resilience observability security performance and operability with clear non-functional expectations
• Show experience guiding MVP onboarding or early lifecycle platform adoption with a focus on sustainable solutions and reduced rework
• Accelerate delivery through pragmatic technical decision-making that balances target architecture with execution realities
• Influence across organisational boundaries managing complex dependencies and senior stakeholders without direct authority
• Partner effectively with developer platform teams to improve developer experience through standard interfaces tooling and patterns
