Position Overview

We are seeking a Thermal-Hydraulics Engineer (Nuclear Thermal-Hydraulics Engineer) to join our reactor development team and contribute to the thermal-hydraulic design analysis and optimization of advanced nuclear reactor systems.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) technology focusing on high-temperature helium-cooled primary loop design coolant flow analysis heat transfer modeling transient simulation and reactor safety system evaluation.

The successful candidate will apply expertise in thermal engineering fluid mechanics heat transfer computational modeling and nuclear reactor systems analysis to support the development of next-generation nuclear energy systems.

You will collaborate closely with reactor physics safety analysis mechanical design fluid systems equipment engineering and structural integrity teams to support integrated reactor design and engineering validation.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Loop Thermal-Hydraulic Analysis

  • Develop and maintain high-fidelity thermal-hydraulic models for reactor primary systems.
  • Analyze:
    • Coolant flow distribution
    • Temperature distribution
    • Pressure behavior
    • Heat transport performance
    • Steady-state and transient operating conditions
  • Evaluate the thermal-hydraulic behavior of high-temperature helium coolant systems including:
    • Heat transfer characteristics
    • Gas flow dynamics
    • Aerothermal performance
    • High-pressure operating behavior

Safety System & Transient Analysis

  • Perform thermal-hydraulic transient analyses for:
    • Emergency cooling systems
    • Decay heat removal systems
    • Accident and off-normal operating scenarios
  • Provide verified thermal-hydraulic boundary conditions and transient input parameters to safety analysis teams.
  • Support evaluation of reactor safety margins and passive cooling performance.

Equipment Thermal Integration

  • Define thermal-hydraulic requirements and interface parameters for critical reactor components including:
    • Intermediate Heat Exchanger (IHX)
    • Helium circulators/blowers
    • Primary piping systems
  • Support equipment design optimization and technical alignment with suppliers.
  • Participate in engineering interface discussions and design reviews.

Modeling Validation & Engineering Documentation

  • Develop:
    • Thermal-hydraulic calculation reports
    • Simulation models and documentation
    • Validation records
    • Engineering design specifications
  • Present analytical results and defend modeling methodologies during formal technical reviews.
  • Support verification and validation activities for reactor thermal-hydraulic systems.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Masters degree or Ph.D. in:
    • Thermal Engineering
    • Fluid Mechanics
    • Energy & Power Engineering
    • Nuclear Engineering
    • Related technical disciplines

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of:
    • Heat transfer fundamentals
    • Thermodynamics
    • Fluid dynamics
    • Thermal-hydraulic system behavior
  • Experience with:
    • Thermal-hydraulic modeling and simulation
    • Engineering calculation methods
    • Experimental thermal-fluid data analysis
  • Knowledge of:
    • Nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics
    • Primary loop systems
    • Coolant system design
    • Transient analysis methods
  • Experience with engineering simulation tools is highly desirable.

Professional Competencies

  • Strong analytical capability and rigorous engineering problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex thermal-fluid systems and develop engineering solutions.
  • Strong collaboration skills across multi-disciplinary technical teams.
  • Good technical communication engineering documentation and design review capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with the following experience will be highly valued:

  • Hands-on experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software including:
    • ANSYS Fluent
    • OpenFOAM
    • STAR-CCM
    • Equivalent CFD tools
  • Experience in:
    • High-temperature gas dynamics
    • Helium coolant systems
    • Thermal-fluid experimental loops
    • Fluid-structure interaction (FSI)
  • Experience in Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) Small Modular Reactor (SMR) or Generation IV reactor technologies.
  • Experience with:
    • Thermal-hydraulic test loop design
    • Reactor system simulation
    • Multiphysics modeling
    • Computational engineering methods
