As a Telecom Engineer-in-Training (EIT) you will be engaged in the design and delivery of mission-critical telecommunications systems across a variety of projects for CIMAs key clients. Our telecommunications team works with industrial and public-sector clients across power utilities energy transportation telecommunications carriers and other critical infrastructure sectors.

Working under the guidance and supervision of experienced engineers you will contribute to telecommunications system design engineering drawings and technical deliverables; perform engineering calculations and technical analyses; coordinate with other engineering disciplines; and support project teams in developing practical reliable and resilient telecommunications solutions across a broad range of wired and wireless applications.

This position provides an opportunity to gain hands-on engineering experience develop your technical and professional competencies and progress toward Professional Engineer (.) registration while working alongside experienced telecommunications professionals. This hybrid role can be based out of our offices in Vancouver Kelowna Calgary or Edmonton.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support the development of telecommunications system designs and engineering deliverables under the guidance and supervision of experienced engineers.
  • Prepare and update network diagrams schematics block diagrams interconnection diagrams and other engineering drawings.
  • Assist with engineering calculations technical analyses equipment selection and design documentation.
  • Support the preparation of technical specifications design reports bills of materials equipment lists and procurement documentation.
  • Assist with project scopes estimates proposals schedules and other project documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews and interdisciplinary coordination activities.
  • Support equipment evaluation staging FAT/SAT installation testing and commissioning activities.
  • Participate in site visits field investigations and data collection as required.
  • Coordinate with internal project teams clients vendors and contractors under the direction of senior project team members.
  • Support responses to site information requests and preparation of record drawings and project closeout documentation.
  • Develop knowledge of applicable engineering standards client requirements and CIMA engineering practices and procedures.
  • Actively develop the technical and professional competencies required for progression toward Professional Engineer (.) registration.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Electronics Engineering Telecommunications Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline.
  • Registered as or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with the applicable provincial engineering regulator.
  • New graduate or up to 2 years of relevant engineering experience in telecommunications networking electrical systems control/automation or related -op internship and relevant academic project experience are valued.
  • Strong interest in telecommunications systems and their application in operationally critical or mission-critical environments with a basic understanding of telecommunications and networking fundamentals.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving organizational written and verbal communication skills with the ability and willingness to learn and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Technical Experience

Academic co-op internship project or work exposure to one or more of the following technologies would be considered an asset. Candidates are not expected to have experience across all areas.

  • Transport & Packet Networks:
    • DWDM/OTN; SONET/SDH and legacy migration; MPLS/MPLS-TP/IP/MPLS; Carrier Ethernet; routing and switching; VLAN; QoS and traffic engineering
  • Wireless Systems:
    • Licensed microwave; LMR; LTE/private wireless; Wi-Fi; satellite communications
  • Utility / OT Telecom:
    • Teleprotection; OPGW and fibre-optic systems; Power Line Carrier (PLC); High Voltage Entrance (HVE); SCADA/RTU communications; IEC 61850 communications
  • Supporting Systems:
    • Telecom DC power; network synchronization/timing; firewalls and secure network interfaces; monitoring and network management systems

Assets

  • Exposure to electric utility telecommunications including teleprotection OPGW/fibre systems Power Line Carrier (PLC) High Voltage Entrance (HVE) and substation communications.
  • Exposure to control and automation systems such as SCADA RTUs PLCs and IEC 61850.
  • Knowledge of Operational Technology (OT) IT/OT convergence cybersecurity principles or critical infrastructure environments.
  • Familiarity with IP networking routing switching VLAN MPLS QoS or traffic engineering concepts.
  • Relevant academic projects co-op/internship experience laboratory work or industry certifications related to telecommunications networking automation or cybersecurity.
  • Demonstrated interest in continuous learning and professional development in telecommunications engineering.
