Liability Assessment Specialist

The Opportunity

Are you a technical specialist who wants to apply your environmental regulatory and liability assessment expertise to work that directly supports responsible energy and mineral development in Alberta The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is looking for a Specialist Liability Assessment to join the Remediation and Contamination Management team within the Regulatory Applications Branch.

In this role you will evaluate site-specific liability assessments under the Oil and Gas Conservation Rules Brine-hosted Minerals Resource Development Rules and Geothermal Resource Development Rules. Your work will help ensure complex sitessuch as gas processing plants large facilities and contaminated areasare assessed using sound technical judgment and appropriate cost considerations for suspension abandonment remediation reclamation and long-term site care.

As part of the Remediation and Contamination Management team you will provide technical guidance and support across liability programs transfer applications security collection processes and related compliance activities. This work is an important part of the AERs broader liability management framework helping the organization reduce potential liability risks strengthen regulatory decision-making and protect Albertans and the environment.

What youll do:

  • Review complex site-specific liability assessments for facilities gas plants contaminated sites and other high-risk locations to help ensure liability estimates are complete defensible and protective of Albertans and the environment.

  • Apply your technical judgment to assess cost estimates for suspension abandonment remediation reclamation monitoring and long-term site care as part of application and liability review processes.

  • Support regulatory decisions by identifying when compliance action may be required and helping ensure regulated parties meet applicable legislative and program requirements.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying gaps in liability management programs recommending practical improvements and helping ensure systems and processes align with program objectives.

What youll bring:

  • Bachelors degree in science Engineering Environmental Sciences or a related science discipline.

  • 4 years of progressive experience in the Oil and Gas Industry and Environmental Consulting or 6 years of regulatory experience as a specialist in applied science.

  • Membership in one or more of the following associations is required: Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA) Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB) Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Directiveand 090 specific to liability assessments.

  • Strong organizational time management and project management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.

  • Excellent written verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to build credibility across internal and external relationships.
