Job Summary

The SoilRes3 Lab Research Coordinator will: 1) plan and perform experiments and fieldwork related to soil-plant feedback 2) troubleshoot problems 3) collect record and interpret experimental results and 4) coordinate lab activities organize the workflow of different lab projects help with data collection follow existing protocols assist with greenhouse and field experiments take care of the soil archive library and contribute to fostering a cohesive lab environment.

Organizational Status

Under the supervision of Dr. Cornelis the Lab Research Coordinator will closely collaborate with graduate students of the SoilRes3 Lab by assisting students with fieldwork and lab experiments. The Lab Research Coordinator is a key lab member in facilitating the communication between the researchers.

Work Performed

• Provides lab training and orientation to graduate students working in the SoilRes3 laboratory. Ensuring the lab and lab members comply with safety rules including the facilitation of lab safety.

• Ensures the follow-up and completion of required graduate student forms including supervisory committee forms meeting minutes MSc/PhD defense documentation.

• Maintain an up-to-date record of publications and presentations by lab members.

• Makes recommendations to optimize the workflow of research projects running in the SoilRes3 lab.

• Manages and oversees the daily operations and finances of the SoilRes3 Lab. Under the supervision of Dr. Cornelis the Lab Research Coordinator is also involved with guiding the research performed by the graduate students of the SoilRes3 lab.

• Supporting the organization of lab supplies and equipment including assisting with purchase requests.

• Responsible for organizing a workshop and coordinating the work between academic and private partners of the BIOCHAR project.

• Writes technical reports that must be shared with policy-makers and provides input on the researchers performance.

• Responsible for maintaining lab cohesion by organizing weekly lab meetings and coordinating monthly lab events and gatherings.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Lab Research Coordinator will receive supervision and guidance from Dr. Cornelis when issues arise or when judgment is required. While the position involves some independence in planning daily tasks responsibilities are assigned and work is carried out in coordination with the lab team.

Supervision Received

The position is under the supervision of Dr. Cornelis who provides detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and on new or unusual problems. The Lab Research Coordinator will meet with the PI on a bi-weekly basis for consultation and discussion of research progress and issues.

Dr. Corneliss training approach involves tailoring scientific methodology to each highly qualified personnel (HQP) while guiding them through the interpretation and dissemination of data with critical thinking effective scientific communication and the use of good outreach programs. His role is also to create a stimulating work environment (open-minded inclusive collaborative and interdisciplinary) that will spark creative thought in looking beyond specific short-term research objectives. After HQPs have received thorough and solid training in their respective research areas Dr. Corneliss role is to stimulate connections between ideas and to have HQPs see that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Supervision Given

The Lab Research Coordinator will be involved in assisting for the BIOCHAR research project: Manure charged biochar as a circular solution and integrated BMP for optimizing carbon capture and nutrient-use efficiency to enhance resiliency in soil-crop systems (1 undergraduate student and 1 Postdoctoral researcher)

The Lab Research Coordinator will be directly involved in the supervision of the BIOCHAR research project together with the supervision of field and lab tasks developed in the Work Performed sections.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Preference for a graduate degree in a relevant soil and environmental science discipline.

• Knowledge requirements in soil science environmental sciences agriculture and land management.

• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
