Sessional Faculty SOCW 4200 ()

The School of Social Work and Human Service (Faculty of Education and Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for one sessional lecturer to teach the course SOCW 420001 Intimate Partner Violence and Social Work Practice (300). This course is delivered in-person at the Kamloops campus on Tuesdays between 17:30 and 20:20 between September 8th and December 23rd.

SOCW 4200 Calendar Description
Students are introduced to social work practice with individuals families and communities in response to violence in adult intimate relationships. Students explore intimate partner violence (IPV) and social work practice from a variety of perspectives including cross-cultural international Indigenous and feminist. This course emphasizes a social work practice approach that is community-based culturally responsive/safe feminist and this course IPV is understood as violence in adult intimate relationships including same-sex couples. Additional topics include IPV in Indigenous communities children who witness violence and dating violence.

Educational Objectives/Learning Outcomes
1. Describe and critique a range of theoretical perspectives on intimate partner violence used by social workers and other professionals.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of common assessment and practice interventions used by social workers responding to intimate partner violence.
3. Be able to describe and critique a community-based culturally sensitive feminist and anti-oppression social work practice as a response to intimate partner violence.
4. Describe the general incidence of intimate partner violence and issues regarding measurement.
5. Describe and critique critical issues in intimate partner violence in Indigenous communities and other ethno-cultural groups.
6. Develop a knowledge base in a specific area of intimate partner violence.

A doctoral degree in relevant discipline with an undergraduate credential in social work is preferred. The minimum academic qualification is a masters degree in social work.
Successful teaching experience in post-secondary institutions preferred.
A minimum of five years of related practice experience within the field of Intimate Partner Violence is required.
Excellent organizational interpersonal and communication skills required.
An ability to demonstrate experience integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required.
Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding empathy and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) are required.
Teaching excellence including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) is required.
Candidates must provide evidence of their ability to commit to creating time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings supporting and embracing differences with kindness love and respect (NIMMIWG 15.7).
