Sessional Faculty HUMS 1580 ()

The School of Social Work and Human Service (Faculty of Education and Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for one sessional lecturer to teach the course HUMS 1580 Introduction to Professional Human Service Practice. This course is offered in-person at the Kamloops campus on Fridays from 8:30 to 11:20 from September 8th to December 23rd.

HUMS 1580 Calendar Description
Students review the field of human service practice beginning with an overview of personal and professional values and ethics that are key elements of practice. Additional topics include observation record keeping community mapping supervision team work and self-care.

Educational Objectives/Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the five values that are key to a professional practice: individualization self-determination confidentiality accountability and normalization.
2. Reflect on personal values and their congruence with professional values in human service practice.
3. Identify aspects of professional knowledge in human service practice
4. Demonstrate basic observation and recording skills
5. Apply the concepts of diversity context power & discourse in critical reflection
6. Identify personal stressors and self-care strategies frequently associated with human service work
7. Provide a public presentation and practice giving and receiving feedback
8. Investigate a human service in a community and develop a visual representation

QUALIFICATIONS
A doctoral degree in a relevant discipline with a graduate credential in social work or child and youth care is preferred. A masters degree in social work or child and youth care is required.
Successful teaching experience in post-secondary institutions required. Experience teaching entry level students preferred.
A minimum of five years of related practice experience in social work settings is required.
Demonstrated experience preparing human service workers for field education and/or professional practice is required.
Excellent organizational interpersonal and communication skills required.
An ability to demonstrate experience integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required.
Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding empathy and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) are required.
Teaching excellence including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) is required.
Candidates must provide evidence of their ability to commit to creating time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings supporting and embracing differences with kindness love and respect (NIMMIWG 15.7).
