Reporting to the Manager Accounting and Financial Reporting the Senior Accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation analysis and reporting of financial results for ATCO Energy Ltd. You will provide accounting support for gas and electricity wholesale transactions including commodity settlements month-end accounting account reconciliations management reporting government filings internal controls and external audit requirements.

Success in this role requires strong analytical skills sound professional judgment attention to detail and the ability to collaborate effectively with Finance colleagues and business partners across the organization.

On a daily basis youll...

Financial Reporting & Month-End Accounting

  • Complete the full month-end accounting cycle including journal entries accruals account reconciliations and financial reporting.

  • Prepare and analyze accurate monthly quarterly and annual financial results within established timelines.

  • Prepare management and financial reporting packages including audit pack materials business unit reporting variance analysis and quarterly and annual reporting requirements.

Financial Analysis

  • Review and analyze electricity and natural gas commodity activity including settlements with the AESO and third-party counterparties.

  • Investigate settlement differences accounting discrepancies and financial variances and coordinate their timely resolution.

Compliance Audit & Technical Accounting

  • Prepare monthly and annual government filings accurately and within established timelines.

  • Prepare clear complete and well-supported working papers for internal and external audit purposes.

  • Interpret and apply relevant accounting standards policies and internal accounting guidelines to business transactions.

Other Responsibilities

  • Support ad hoc projects analyses and business initiatives as required.

  • Perform other related responsibilities that are consistent with the purpose and level of the position.

  • Collaborate with FP&A in the development of business plans forecasts and related financial analyses as required.

  • A detail-oriented accounting professional with strong analytical skills and sound professional judgment.

  • Highly organized and able to manage competing priorities while meeting multiple deadlines.

  • A collaborative team member who builds effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced commercially focused retail environment.

  • Curious and improvement-minded with a willingness to contribute ideas and strengthen processes.

What you have:

  • An undergraduate degree in Accounting or a related field.

  • A recognized Canadian professional accounting designation such as a CPA or an equivalent internationally recognized professional accounting designation.

  • A minimum of five years of relevant accounting or financial reporting experience.

  • Strong knowledge of financial accounting month-end close account reconciliations financial controls and financial reporting.

  • Experience with full-cycle month-end accounting and financial and management reporting.

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial reporting systems.

  • Experience with Oracle ERP Production is considered an asset.

  • Experience in Albertas retail electricity and natural gas industry is considered an asset but is not required.
