Job Summary

Sunnybrook Research Institute is the research enterprise of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre a teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Research spans three Toronto-based campuses eight programs and three scientific platforms. Our main aims are to understand and prevent disease and to develop treatments that enhance and extend life. Our vision is to invent the future of health care. Each year we conduct about $100 million in research across 500000 square feet including in the worlds first Centre for Research in Image-Guided Therapeutics.

Dr. Kozaks research group is involved in studying emerging viruses to better understand viral pathogenesis develop novel diagnostics and evaluate countermeasures. Additionally work focuses on the genomic epidemiology of respiratory pathogens to better understand transmission and improve surveillance.

Summary of Duties:

The individual will assist with multiple ongoing research projects in the lab related to virology. These will include both wet-lab based projects (eg. cell culture animal studies) in both a BSL2 and potentially a BSL3 environment as well as patient reviews and analysis of patient samples. The individual will assist with reagent ordering and other lab operational duties as needed. Additionally due to the nature of clinical trial work there may requirements for flexibility in availability (although this is infrequent and lab work is normally done Monday-Friday 9 to 5).

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor of Science in a relevant field is required. A CRC is considered an asset
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in clinical laboratory
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a research laboratory
  • Experience writing manuscripts and conference abstracts
  • Experience with molecular assays specimen handling and processing clinical samples is required.
  • Willingness to be trained to perform animal work and experience working with animals is considered an asset
  • Strong interpersonal time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in scientific writing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research regulations and guidelines (eg. clinical lab protocols biosafety etc)
  • Demonstrate ability to train new members of a lab team in protocols
  • Experience writing REB and CTO applications

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science required (CRC an asset)
