Mental Health Counsellor (Temporary)

This position has an initial appointment of one year from the date of hire.

Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

Help shape how students access care through a responsive single-session therapy model.

Reporting to the Director of Counselling & Clinical Services (CCS) the mental health counsellor delivers single session therapy and first-session assessment and intervention to students at the University of Alberta. This is a chance to practice within a responsive system that prioritizes rapid access. Youll work alongside a multidisciplinary team of social workers psychologists psychiatrists nurses doctoral residents and masters practicum students.

Beyond direct clinical work the role includes facilitating psychoeducational workshops and skills-based programming and contributing to program development and evaluation alongside CCS leadership. The counsellor may also assist with hiring training and/or supervision of graduate students.

• Primarily provide single-session therapy and other assessment and intervention-based first session appointments along with all associated administrative work such as case notes and proper record keeping. Initiate referrals to more specialized services when appropriate.
• On occasion provide additional services such as initial consultations and/or limited individual couple or group counselling modalities.
• Develop deliver and assess a variety of psychoeducational workshops.
• Contribute to program development and evaluation.
• Participate in outreach activities across the campus community to support mental health including consultations collaboration and education.
• Occasionally assist with hiring training or supervising graduate students.
• Additional duties as required by the Director.

• Masters degree in Counselling Psychology Clinical Psychology or Masters degree in Clinical Social Work and authorized to perform restricted psychosocial interventions through the ACSW with preference to those on the clinical registry or working toward it.
• Registration in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists or the Alberta College of Social Workers and familiar with the standards of practices and the code of ethics for the relevant profession.
• Must have both extensive breadth and depth of training knowledge and professional skills considering the increasing complexity severity and chronicity of mental health concerns among post-secondary students.
• Knowledge of single session approach to counselling.
• Knowledge and skills relating to client crisis management and stabilization.
• Ability to both establish rapport with a wide variety of clients and create a process of change that will enhance the wellbeing of students who access the service.
• Foundational knowledge of counselling theory and practices developmental psychology social psychology abnormal psychology personality theory etc.
• Must carry private professional liability insurance.

This position offers a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $77513 to $128708.
