Job Summary
The position of Maintenance Technician I/II is responsible for preventive maintenance troubleshooting repair and installation of manufacturing equipment used in flexible packaging production. This position supports production by maintaining equipment reliability minimizing downtime and ensuring safe operation of machinery and facility systems.
Essential Duties
The following duties are an overview of the primary duties and responsibilities of the Maintenance Technician and should not be considered an all-inclusive list:
Preventive Maintenance
1. Perform scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on manufacturing and facility equipment.
2. Inspect lubricate adjust repair and replace components to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
3. Complete maintenance work orders and document repairs in the maintenance management system.
Equipment Troubleshooting and Repair
1. Troubleshoot diagnose and repair mechanical electrical pneumatic and automation-related equipment failures.
2. Maintain and repair:
- Tin Tie Applicators
- Valve Applicators
- Pouch Making Machines
- Film Slitters
- Conveyors and Material Handling Equipment
- Packaging and Converting Equipment
- Robotic knowledge
3. Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring failures.
Electrical and Controls Systems
1. Troubleshoot electrical systems including:
o Low Voltage DC Controls
o 120V 240V and 480V AC Systems
o Motors Contactors Relays Sensors and Switches
2. Read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
3. Troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment.
4. Troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
5. Support troubleshooting of motion control systems including servo motors servo drives stepper motors and associated controls.
Mechanical and Pneumatic Systems
1. Troubleshoot and repair:
- Bearings
- Chains and Sprockets
- Gearboxes
- Rollers
- Belts and Pulley Systems
- Vacuum Systems
- Air Cylinders
- Solenoid Valves
- Regulators and Air Preparation Equipment
2. Perform equipment alignments adjustments and component replacements.
Continuous Improvement
1. Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability efficiency and safety.
2. Participate in equipment upgrades and capital improvement projects.
3. Assist with equipment installations and commissioning activities.
Safety Responsibilities
All Flair employees are required to be an active safety participant at Flair by:
1. Attending required safety training sessions
2. Comply with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements.
3. Utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
4. Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
5. Reporting any accidents near misses and safety concerns to a designated safety team leader in a timely manner
6. Following the Companys work safety rules and procedures.
Food Safety Responsibilities
- Employees shall maintain a good understanding of Flairs food safety policies GMP regulatory requirements and HACCP principles reflecting industry best practices FSSC 22000 certification scheme and relevant CTPAT minimum security criteria.
- Employees shall report food safety non-conformities to the responsible person(s). Responsible personnel shall have defined responsibility and authority to initiate and record actions.
Required Training Experience Licenses and Certifications
In addition to performing satisfactorily all the duties and responsibilities of the position an individual in this position must possess and maintain the following knowledge skills qualifications and/or abilities:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Technical degree industrial maintenance training or equivalent experience preferred.
- Maintenance Technician I: 2-3 years of industrial maintenance experience.
- Maintenance Technician II: 2-5 years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
- Familiarity with PLC-controlled equipment
- Basic understanding of industrial electrical systems.
- Ability to read electrical mechanical and pneumatic schematics.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices.
- Possess and maintain a valid drivers license and satisfactory driving record
- Valid Canadian Passport. International travel to other facilities may be required
- Must be able to speak read write and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform job functions.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in flexible packaging converting or packaging manufacturing.
- Experience with pouch-making equipment slitters valve applicators or tin tie machinery.
- Knowledge of PLC troubleshooting.
- Experience with VFDs servo systems and motion control applications.
- Computerized Maintenance management system experience.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements:
- The duties of this position requires frequent activity and the ability to stand for 8 to 12 hours per day with adequate breaks.
- Moderate physical activity is required;
- Ability to lift up-to 50lbs on occasion;
- Ability to stand walk stoop/bend lift and frequent repetitive motion and use of hands to finger grasp handle or feel objects tools or controls and normal vision acuity.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately.
- Work hours will vary depending upon the needs of the Companys customers at any given time and will involve working long or non-traditional hours to fulfill Company and/or customer needs projects or special circumstances.
- Effectively use a variety of hand and power tools measuring devices (rulers calipers etc.) and other shop tools as required to perform required duties.
- Ability to work with little supervision and make responsible decisions
- Ability to work a flexible schedule and overtime hours as necessary
