Summit Search Group has been retained by Ron Paul Garden Centre on the recruitment of a Landscape & Maintenance Manager. A family-owned business serving Winnipeg since 1965 Ron Paul Garden Centre operates a well-established retail greenhouse and garden centre on St. Marys Road alongside a full-service residential and commercial landscaping and property maintenance division. The business has built a strong local reputation across decades of hands-on relationship-driven service and brings deep horticultural expertise to everything from plant selection and design through to installation and ongoing property care.


The maintenance division serves a diverse mix of residential and commercial clients across property maintenance softscape installation tree and shrub planting and a specialized and well-regarded line of custom seasonal patio planter installations for local restaurant and hospitality partners. The team takes genuine pride in the quality of their work and the depth of the client relationships they maintain many of which span multiple years and seasons.


The Opportunity

Reporting to ownership the Landscape & Maintenance Manager is a hands-on leadership role that divides time between managing a small field crew and personally executing a diverse range of residential and commercial property maintenance and softscape projects. The Manager operates with meaningful day-to-day autonomy and serves as the primary point of contact for the divisions client portfolio with ownership engaged for support and the outgoing manager available to support the transition and knowledge transfer.


The role follows a natural seasonal rhythm: spring is the ramp-up; May and June carry the most compressed and demanding volume of the year driven by concentrated demand for restaurant patio installations that all come at once; summer shifts to ongoing maintenance tree planting and client management; fall is cleanup season; and winter centres on commercial snow-clearing operations including front-end loader work for larger properties. The incoming Manager will be supported by two crew members with additional temporary staffing added during peak periods.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead schedule and mentor a field crew overseeing daily operational planning task delegation safety standards and quality of workmanship across all residential and commercial maintenance accounts.
  • Design quote and install custom seasonal patio planter arrangements for local restaurant and hospitality clients serving as the primary point of contact throughout each engagement and developing this line of business over time.
  • Manage a portfolio of residential and commercial property maintenance accounts including lawn care tree and shrub planting and pruning sod installation mulch and rock bed work and indoor tropical plant maintenance for a commercial client.
  • Oversee commercial and residential snow-clearing operations during the winter months including operation of a front-end loader for larger commercial properties and coordinate on-call crew scheduling across the season.
  • Operate maintain and inspect all fleet vehicles trailers and field equipment including mini-excavators dingos riding mowers cutoff saws and plate compactors ensuring everything stays in safe and road-ready condition.
  • Manage client relationships from initial quote through to multi-year service agreements handling inquiries and escalations professionally and maintaining accurate project worksheets and tree and shrub warranty records.


Qualifications

  • 3- 5 years of proven experience in landscape maintenance hardscaping or landscape construction; the right candidate who demonstrates leadership potential and genuine drive will be considered for training on specific technical skills.
  • Valid drivers license with a clean driving record and demonstrated experience towing trailers; a Class 3 license or heavy trailer endorsement is a strong asset.
  • Comfort operating a range of field equipment including mini-excavators dingos riding mowers cutoff saws and plate compactors with a disciplined approach to daily vehicle and equipment inspections.
  • A practical self-sufficient problem-solver with strong time management and communication skills comfortable managing client relationships crew schedules and day-to-day field decisions with meaningful independence.
  • Physical stamina to repeatedly lift up to 60 lbs and work productively outdoors across all Manitoba seasonal conditions including through the compressed and high-volume spring peak season.
  • A genuine interest in building horticultural and plant knowledge over time is strongly valued; familiarity with residential and commercial plant selection care and basic pest management is considered a meaningful asset.
