Job Summary
Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSSrelated work Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada by Canadians.
The Intern Design Buildprovides a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of Engineering Production Planning and Shipyard Operations within one of North Americas most complex shipbuilding environments. Unlike a traditional engineering internship focused solely on design activities this role offers direct exposure to how engineering information is transformed into executable vessel construction strategies and production workflows. Working alongside production planners engineers and operations teams the intern will support real-world shipbuilding activities including build strategy development construction sequencing workflow planning production coordination and Design for Production (DFP) initiatives. The role is ideal for candidates interested in understanding how large-scale engineering projects move from concept and design into physical construction and execution within an active shipyard environment.
This position offers hands-on exposure to vessel construction planning cross-functional coordination production engineering processes and operational problem solving across multiple stages of shipbuilding execution.
Note: Due to business needs this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue North Vancouver.
What youll do
Under the direction of the Supervisor Design Build the intern will support production engineering and planning activities associated with new vessel construction projects.
Responsibilities may include:
- Supporting the development of vessel build strategies and production execution plans.
- Assisting with construction sequencing workflow planning and production coordination activities.
- Participating in Design for Production (DFP) and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assisting with production planning analysis drawing reviews and constructability assessments.
- Supporting coordination between Engineering Planning Production Procurement and Quality teams.
- Assisting in the development of work packages planning documentation and production workflows.
- Supporting analysis related to fabrication assembly erection and outfit installation activities.
- Participating in process improvement initiatives focused on productivity efficiency and waste reduction.
- Gaining exposure to real-time shipyard operations production problem solving and vessel construction execution.
- Supporting reporting data analysis and planning activities related to shipyard production operations.
What youll bring
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelors degree in:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Naval Architecture
- Marine Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Or another related technical discipline
- Previous exposure to manufacturing shipbuilding construction or industrial operations is considered an asset.
- Interest in production engineering project execution planning or shipyard operations is strongly preferred.
- Strong interest in the integration of Engineering and Production Operations.
- Strong analytical organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced cross-functional environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated initiative curiosity and willingness to learn.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt within evolving project environments.
- Strong attention to detail and critical thinking abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word Outlook PowerPoint).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Basic understanding of manufacturing or large-scale industrial production environments.
- Exposure to CAD software such as Cadmatic or AutoCAD is considered an asset.
- Exposure to ERP or production management systems is considered an asset.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $28.00/hour.
Start Date of Internship: Tuesday September 8th 2026.
