OVERVIEW
Vertex is seeking a full-time permanent Intermediate Environmental Scientist to join our Ontario team. The successful candidate will bring a strong technical background in environmental site assessment remediation environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance. This role is primarily field-based and involves planning and executing environmental investigations overseeing drilling and sampling programs collecting and interpreting environmental data and supporting remediation across a variety of project types. When not in the field you will be responsible for data interpretation analysis and technical report writing.
Reporting to the Environmental Manager the Intermediate Environmental Scientist will play a key role in delivering high-quality environmental services while ensuring compliance with applicable provincial and federal regulations including Ontarios Excess Soil Regulation and environmental site assessment requirements. The successful candidate will work closely with clients Indigenous communities contractors and internal technical teams to support safe effective and practical environmental solutions.
This position is well suited for a motivated environmental professional who enjoys a balance of field and office work thrives in a dynamic environment and is passionate about environmental stewardship technical excellence and mentoring junior staff.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelors degree in Environmental Science Environmental Engineering or a related discipline
- A minimum of 4 years of experience executing environmental assessment remediation reclamation and monitoring projects for oil and gas clients preferably within a consulting environment
- Professional designation or eligibility for registration with a recognized professional association (e.g. . . EP) is considered an asset
- Project experience involving oil and gas projects is preferred
- Proven experience planning and executing Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) including drilling programs soil sampling and groundwater monitoring
- Strong understanding of Ontario environmental regulations including ESA and Excess Soil requirements; experience working in other provinces and territories is considered an asset
- Excellent client relationship management and communication skills
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities with demonstrated experience preparing high-quality technical reports
- Commitment to teamwork collaboration and mentoring junior environmental professionals.
- Experience implementing alternative remediation technologies and risk assessment approaches
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to build and maintain productive relationships with municipalities First Nations communities regulatory agencies and other government organizations
- Possession of a valid Ontario drivers license and a clean driving record is required
- Exceptional organizational planning and time management skills
- Self-motivated with a proactive solution-oriented approach and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced challenging environment
- Current industry safety certifications are considered an asset
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Execute environmental projects and field programs including site investigations environmental monitoring data collection and technical reporting with approximately 60% field-based work
- Conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and industry best practices
- Plan and conduct Phase II ESAs including drilling programs test pitting soil sampling groundwater monitoring monitoring well installation and data interpretation
- Lead and coordinate environmental field activities including the supervision of drilling contractors subcontractors technicians and junior staff
- Participate in and facilitate investigations related to environmental incidents and spills including site assessment delineation and reporting
- Conduct groundwater surface water soil sediment vapour and other environmental sampling programs
- Support contaminated site assessment site remediation reclamation and environmental monitoring projects
- Monitor remediation and reclamation activities and provide technical recommendations based on field observations and analytical results
- Assist with excess soil characterization management and compliance activities in accordance with applicable regulations
- Prepare detailed field notes site records technical memoranda environmental reports and regulatory documentation
- Review and interpret laboratory analytical data and field information to support site characterization and environmental decision-making
- Ensure all field activities are conducted safely and in compliance with company health safety environmental and quality management systems
- Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews of field data sampling procedures and project documentation
- Maintain environmental monitoring equipment and ensure field instruments are properly calibrated and operated
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients Indigenous communities contractors and internal stakeholders
- Coordinate with Project Managers and technical discipline leads to ensure the timely completion of field programs deliverables and reporting requirements
- Provide technical guidance mentorship and training to junior environmental professionals
- Support regulatory inspections site visits and environmental compliance assessments as required
- Participate in emergency response and spill response activities including occasional after-hours support when required
- Stay current with environmental regulations industry standards and emerging assessment monitoring remediation and reclamation practices
- Demonstrate strong communication problem-solving and interpersonal skills while working in multidisciplinary project teams
- Perform other related duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Combination of office remote and fieldbased work with flexibility based on project needs
- Regular field assignments requiring travel and leadership presence on active sites
- Participation in physically demanding outdoor work including oversight of staff in varying weather terrain and site conditions
- Requirement to exercise independent judgment and decisionmaking during field execution and site supervision
LOCATION
- This position will be based out of Sarnia Ontario with some travel.
