Your Contribution to NRSI
NRSI is looking for a qualified field biologist with experience working in remote field locations to join our growing team. Field work is expected to primarily be conducted in northern Ontario but may also be located in southern Ontario or rarely out of province. The successful applicant will be based out of our Waterloo office and expected to regularly contribute to both field- and office-based tasks. This position can accommodate hybrid work with a requirement for in-office attendance at least two days per week when not in the field.

The primary duties and responsibilities for this role include:
  • Leading and/or participating in ecological surveys in remote field locations.
  • Completing background reviews.
  • Managing and analyzing data.
  • Supporting the preparation of reports including writing portions of reports.
  • Coordinating terrestrial and wetland field surveys as required.
  • Supporting the preparation of proposals and cost estimates.
Your Education:
  • A diploma or degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences. Similar educational experience will also be considered.
Key Job Requirements:
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in leading coordinating and conducting ecological field surveys.
  • Technically skilled and proficient in the identification of Ontario wildlife species.
  • Ensuring high-quality field data collection accurate field notes and adherence to standard procedures and protocols.
  • Willing and able to travel for multi-day field surveys often in remote locations under inclement weather in a variety of environmental conditions and occasionally for long hours. This may include overnight stays.
  • Proven ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail including the upkeep of well-organized and thorough field notes.
  • Physically fit as some field work for this position will be physically demanding.
  • Ability to work independently on a regular basis as well as collaboratively in a team and take initiative in field settings.
  • Proven proficiency in report writing data entry and analysis.
  • A commitment to continual improvement of technical abilities.
  • A valid drivers license.
  • Over 21 years old in order to drive NRSI fleet vehicles and rental vehicles.
  • Access to a personal vehicle insured for work purposes.
  • Able to reliably commute on a regular basis to the work location.
Assets:
  • Demonstrated experience conducting ecological surveys such as breeding birds insects turtle basking/nesting anuran breeding snake surveys vegetation inventories and/or Ecological Land Classification.
  • Certification in Ecological Land Classification for southern or northern Ontario.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience with non-vascular plant identification.
  • Experience operating ATVs/UTVs or ARGOs.
  • Experience with trailering.
  • Demonstrated experience working in remote field locations.
