Digital Integrated Circuit (IC) Engineer – UNSW School of Biomedical Engineering

The Opportunity:
The School of Biomedical Engineering has a long history in and is internationally recognised for successfully developing integrated circuits for medical and scientific applications. The Digital Integrated Circuit (IC) Engineer supports interdisciplinary research and development activities relating to next-generation miniature implantable biomedical chips and brain machine interfaces by working collaboratively with academics engineers industry partners and postgraduate researchers.

The position provides specialist technical expertise in digital integrated circuit design laboratory testing and performance evaluation of CMOS integrated circuits for biomedical applications. The role is responsible for contributing to circuit design solutions conducting rigorous engineering analysis and testing and supporting the ongoing improvement and translation of biomedical microelectronic technologies. The role reports to Associate Professor David Tsai (Biomedical Engineering; Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications) and has no direct reports.

• Salary Level 6: $103866 - $110801 per annum 17% superannuation
• Full Time (35 hours)
• Fixed term for 12 months (potential for extension)
• Location: Kensington Sydney Australia (full time on campus attendance)

A Biomedical Engineer analyses and designs solutions to problems in biology and medicine to improve patients lives. Its a role which combines a strong aptitude for engineering an inventive nature and passion for working in healthcare. Biomedical Engineers are fascinated by human anatomy and love problem-solving. They could invent a new diagnostic device such as a Bluetooth ECG that feeds information back to a patients smartphone or a new prosthetic arm controlled by brainwaves which are read through a hat worn by the patient.

Skills & Experience:

• A university degree in electrical engineering or related discipline with three or more years of hands-on experience in CMOS integrated circuit design or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education training or experience.
• Demonstrate relevant experience and knowledge of:
  - RTL design verification and place-and-route for digital circuit workflow in Verilog / SystemVerilog using Cadence XSim Genus and Innovus.
  - RTL implementation and testing on FPGAs especially on Xilinx / AMD platforms.
  - Successful CMOS integrated circuit design encompassing the full workflow: schematic capture simulations and layout in Cadence Virtuoso.
  - Layout-vs-schematic verification and parasitic extraction using EDA tools from Candence and Mentor Graphics (Siemens).
  - Chip tape-out using commercial foundry.
• Proficient with electronic assembly and testing equipment: soldering station mixed signal oscilloscope waveform generator spectrum analyser and power supply.
• Experience in the following would be desirable:
  - Low-noise low-power methodologies particularly for op-amps and ADCs. o Rectifiers and voltage regulator designs.
• Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
• Excellent time management skills with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
