Position Overview

The Child & Youth Engagement & Outreach Worker supports children youth and families through recreation mentorship community engagement and post-shelter transition services. This role focuses on fostering positive relationships increasing community connection and supporting long-term stability through meaningful engagement opportunities both during shelter stays and following shelter exit.


Using a trauma-informed strengths-based and culturally responsive approach the Child & Youth Engagement & Outreach Worker provides individualized and group-based opportunities that promote confidence belonging leadership wellness and community integration.


The role serves as the primary CYD contact for outreach and transition support for families who consent to continued engagement after leaving shelter.


What Youll Do

  • Develop and facilitate recreational social cultural and physical activity opportunities for children and youth.
  • Coordinate sports wellness arts leadership and community connection activities.
  • Create safe welcoming and engaging environments that encourage participation and skill development.
  • Provide outreach supports for families transitioning out of shelter who consent to ongoing CYD involvement.
  • Support children and youth during transitions into new schools neighborhoods recreation programs and community settings.
  • Assist families in accessing recreational educational mentorship and developmental opportunities within the community.
  • Facilitate connections to community-based supports for up to 68 months following shelter exit.
  • Foster positive child and youth development through mentoring relationships and strengths-based engagement.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with recreation providers sports organizations youth-serving agencies libraries cultural organizations and community groups.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of participation outreach activities engagement goals and referrals.
  • Document services using HOMES Microsoft Teams Program Drive folders and organizational systems.
  • Participate in supervision staff meetings professional development and organizational activities.
  • Promote a positive collaborative team environment.
  • Support coverage functions and coordinated service delivery across CYD roles when required.

What You Bring to Our Mission

  • Diploma or degree in Child & Youth Care Recreation Social Work Human Services Education or related field preferred.
  • Experience working with children youth and families in community recreation outreach or human services settings.
  • Strong understanding of positive youth development mentorship and community engagement approaches.
  • Knowledge of homelessness family transitions and barriers impacting child and youth participation.
  • Experience facilitating recreational leadership or community-based programming.
  • Ability to engage children and youth from diverse backgrounds and developmental stages.
  • Strong communication relationship-building and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of community resources recreation systems and referral processes.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office 365 Teams and documentation systems.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Class 5 Drivers License considered an asset.
  • Police Information Check and Child Intervention Check required.
