Job Summary

The Centre for Accessibilityfacilitatesdisability-related accommodations and programming initiatives designed to remove barriers for students with disabilities and ongoing medical conditions in all aspects of university the Accommodated Exam Centre we invigilateover 40000 exams a year to ensure students haveequitableaccess to their assessments.

The program has experienced significant growth over the last few years with daily exam numbers peaking at 950 a you choose to work with ourprogramyou can expect afast paceddynamicandbusy environment. Your primary task is to start invigilate and end examsfor students with unique accessibility requirements including assistive software private spaces student assistants extendedtimeand other complex supports. Your shift may involve checking students in watchingover a large grouproom invigilating several private spaceexamsat once administrative support and other tasks as required including ensuring the exam writings spaces are clean and tidy. During final examsyou can expect to work with our team to start well over300 individual exams at multiple timesthroughoutthe day.

As an invigilatoryouare the first point of communication for students taking their exams with us. You help set the tone for a respectful and inclusive exam environment. Your communication - both verbal and non-verbal - has a real impact on how students experience their time in the Centre for Accessibility.

A calm professional and empathetic approach helps students feel supported and able to focus especially in moments that may already feelstressful. By consistentlydemonstratingcare and respect we contribute to an environment where all studentshave the opportunity todisplay their knowledge of the material to the best oftheirability.


Pleasenote that our exam program isopen from 7:30am to 10:00pm on business days. Staff will beexpectedto take shifts between 7:30 AM and 10:00 PM and the flexibility tocommit to an average of 12 hours of work per week.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Team Lead Accommodated Exams. Is supervised by the Exam Coordinators and works in a team with other exam invigilators.


Work Performed

  • Prepares startsmonitors and endsexams for students with disabilities in private spaces or group settings.
  • Communicatesclearly and professionally with students about their exam providingtimelyupdates and reassurance when issues arise.
  • Setsup adaptive and computer equipment for exams.
  • Compilesdetailed andaccuraterecords and incidentreports.
  • Ensuresexaminees adhere to UBC and Centre for Accessibility exam procedures.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills andtreatsallstudentandcolleagues with fairness dignity andrespect.
  • Maintainsgood communicationwith Exam Coordinators and worksas part of a team with other invigilators.
  • Exercise discretion with tact when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters.
  • Completestasks assigned by Exam Coordinators which can include tidying organizing and assisting with administrative duties.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to provide service that meets these standards may create hardships for students with disabilities seeking academic accommodation compromise the relationship of the Centre for Accessibility with community constituents who may experience marginalization or disadvantage as a result of the interaction or negatively impact the public image of the unit and University.

Receives supervision from the Exam Coordinators and the Team Leads Accommodated Exams.

  • Must be a registeredstudentat the University of British Columbia
  • Ability tomaintaina professional respectful and inclusive environment when supporting students with diverse needs.
  • Strong preference for students who are registered in courses that do not require exams
  • Demonstrates reliability and accountability by consistently adhering toestablishedschedules minimizing disruptions to students and team operations.
  • Strong communicationandinterpersonal skills
  • Ability to contribute to a positiverespectfuland dynamic team environment
  • Ability to remain calm patient and professional in high-pressure situations particularly when supporting students with disabilities and diverse accessibility needs who may experience stress anxiety frustration or emotional distress during examinations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare detailed reports using clear and concise business English.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and ability to accurately follow proceduresin afast- pacedenvironment.
  • Ability to follow directions work independently and to work within a team environment
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities in education or in a service-oriented environment an asset
