Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.
HOURS:
This is a casual/on-call position. The successful candidate will need to have weekend availability.
CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:
The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic or typical of the job class:
- Prepares meals; may prepare for special dietary needs of the residents
- Adapts work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services
- Makes use of and decides on best use of resources including donations to minimize waste
- Follows guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitors practices to ensure adherence
- May perform some employee supervisory duties in the absence of the Food Services Manager
- May supervises students volunteers and / or residents in work therapy
- May order food supplies
- Performs other duties as assigned.
NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.
MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED:
The successful job applicant will have completed High School plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months.
NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
SPECIAL LICENSES DIPLOMAS CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS:
The successful applicant will hold/have:
- Cooks papers (1 year course)

MINIMUM PRIOR RELATED EXPERIENCE:
- The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:
- One to three years of prior related experience with at least one year of institutional cooking experience.
- Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion (i.e. The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED:
- The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing moderate amounts of lifting cutting chopping carrying supplies and walking.
- The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.
CONCENTRATION REQUIRED:
- The performance of the job requires frequent attention to the preparation of food reading recipes adhering to safety procedures and regulations and occasionally ordering supplies.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL RESOURCES:
- The incumbents responsibility for Financial Resources:
- The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly or on a relief basis or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend disburse or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCES:
- The incumbents responsibility for Human Resources:
- The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. He/She is responsible for providing direction and checking results but generally works along with those supervised.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The incumbents work environment is typically in a kitchen in a ministry unit/social services facility.
The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Dealing with angry people
- Verbal Abuse
- Hot/Steamy environment
- Noisy
- Crowded in some cases
- Pressure with timelines
- Cuts Burns and entering freezers
- The incumbent is required to travel up to 30% of the time.
EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:
The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:
- Physical attacks by others (verbal)
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Moving objects
- Sharp objects
- Electrical hazards
- Injury from lifting
- Falling on wet/slippery floors
- Cuts Burns and entering freezers
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:
The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
- Universal Precautions
- Use of rubber mats
- Use coats provided to go into freezers
- Use gloves provided
- Immunization for Hepatitis B
- Vaccination against Tuberculosis
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $20.60 to $20.71 with a maximum of $20.81.Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
