We are seeking an Application Engineer with strong project management capability to support our Optical Products Group.
This role combines engineering customer-facing field work and cross-functional project coordination. You will be responsible for delivering customized optical and laser-based measurement systems from concept through installation and commissioning.
This position is suited for an engineer who is comfortable working in industrial environments engaging directly with customers and managing multiple technical projects simultaneously. The role is based in the GTA with international travel required.
Responsibilities
Manage end-to-end execution of customer projects including scope definition planning coordination and delivery
Participate in order review meetings to confirm technical requirements and develop project work orders
Develop installation drawing packages including mechanical layouts wiring diagrams and system interconnections
Configure and adapt optical and instrumentation systems to meet customer-specific applications
Support system integration activities including setup calibration testing and validation
Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) including documentation and customer sign-off
Install commission and service systems at customer sites globally
Provide technical training and ongoing support to customers sales teams and internal stakeholders
Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to instrumentation automation and control systems in industrial environments
Collaborate with production engineering and product teams to support design improvements and custom solutions
Develop and document custom communication protocols and system interfaces
Monitor project timelines prioritize tasks and manage multiple concurrent projects
Maintain detailed project documentation commissioning reports and engineering change records (ECNs)
Support continuous improvement through feedback on product performance and field experience

Requirements:
MUST have:
Bachelors degree in Electrical Electronics or Mechatronics Engineering preferred; relevant technologist or technician diploma with strong experience will be considered
5-10 years of experience in industrial environments (manufacturing steel mills automation or similar) including commissioning maintenance and troubleshooting
Strong hands-on experience with industrial instrumentation sensors and automation systems
Working knowledge of PLCs VFDs drives encoders and process control systems
Experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g. Ethernet TCP/IP Modbus Profibus Profinet)
Familiarity with industrial networks including managed switches fiber optics and network configuration
Experience with SCADA systems data acquisition tools and industrial databases is an asset
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics wiring diagrams and mechanical drawings
Practical experience with system integration calibration and validation processes
Exposure to HMI systems vision systems lasers and motion control (servo/stepper motors) preferred
Proficiency with engineering and project tools such as AutoCAD SolidWorks MS Project and ERP/PDM systems
Strong project management skills with the ability to manage timelines and competing priorities
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal with the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams
High attention to detail with strong organizational and problem-solving capabilities
Valid G-class drivers license
Ability to travel internationally as required
Must be eligible to work in Canada
