The Department of Athletics and Recreation is currently seeking student help as Student Active Health Coaches. This position reports to the Active Health Programmer in the Department of Athletics and Recreation Centre for Sport and Wellness.The Student Active Health Coach is a key component of an exciting new program at Capilano University called Move More North Shore (CapU). This collaborative program will allow University health and counselling services to refer currently inactive students/employees to the Move More North Shore CapU program. A supervisor will review the case and then match the participant with their Active Health Coach. Over the course of the 8-week program participants will be guided by their Active Health Coach. The Active Health Coach will:
1) Work with the participant to develop a two-month action plan for physical activity
2) Connect the participant to a physical activity of their choice whether its training in the campus weight room a campus recreation program or a community activity/program.
3) Provide support to the participant throughout the two months by identifying barriers providing social connection and giving lifestyle change/goal setting supports.
While the Student Active Health Coach must have a strong background in and passion for physical activity they do not need to be a certified personal trainer.
The Student Active Health Coach will have the flexibility to choose virtual meeting dates/times with participants allowing them to have an adjustable schedule. The Active Health Coach will meet with each participant via Microsoft Teams for a 1hr in-person initial consultation and will follow up with weekly phone contact and a final check-in/evaluation. Student Active Health Coaches will also work together to co-facilitate monthly healthy lifestyle workshops for all program participants. All of these interactions will take place online/over the phone. Each coach will see a maximum of 3 clients over the course of the semester for a maximum of approximately 4 hours/week. Coaches will receive significant professional development and support over the course of the program through professional development sessions and regular check-ins.
Job Description:
Key Responsibilities:
- Meet with participant via Microsoft Teams for the initial consultation
- Provide ongoing support via weekly phone check-ins
- Facilitate monthly healthy lifestyle workshops for all participants alongside teammates
- Participate in tracking of physical activity and program evaluation
- Attend trainings meetings and professional development sessions with the Move More North Shore program lead
- Provide input for improvement and changes to enhance the Move More North Shore program
Skills Required:
- Must be a Capilano University student
- Certified personal trainer an asset but not required- there will be no specific exercise prescription (CFC CSEP and AFLCA)
- 2nd year Human Kinetics or equivalent is a definite asset
- Strong inter-personal and relationship-building skills are required
- Must have experience with goal setting and behaviour change
- Must have a basic understanding of exercise prescription and physical activity (eg. FITT principle)
- Must have strong organizational skills responsibility professionalism and ability to organize their own schedule. They must have consistent availability throughout the school year.
- SFA and CPR certifications required

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for student employment a student must be in good academic standing with the University. Good standing is defined as having a GPA of 2.0 and no current notations regarding academic standing student conduct or outstanding fees per policy S2003-003 Academic Standing a copy of which can be found on the Universitys website.
Domestic students must be enrolled in and maintain a minimum of two or more (6 credits) courses at Capilano University throughout the work term; international students must: during the fall and winter semesters be enrolled in and maintain a minimum of 9 credits at Capilano University throughout the work term; have a valid Study Permit.
Student employees are not required to be enrolled in courses during the summer term to maintain eligibility for employment; however they must have been enrolled in a minimum of six credits during the preceding spring term. Furthermore international students must abide by the terms of their work or study visas.
Students who complete their studies in the spring or summer terms may have their appointments extended until August 31 of the same year; students who complete their studies in the fall term may have their appointments extended until December 31 of the same year.
