We are seeking an experienced GIS Consultant (Medior level) to support the integration development and optimization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within a complex public sector environment focused on nature and environmental management.
In this role you will design implement and maintain GIS functionalities across multiple applications and platforms. You will be responsible for structuring geospatial data enabling geospatial services and ensuring effective visualization and usage of geodata for both internal and external stakeholders.
The environment is highly data-driven and supports strategic programs such as digital transformation and Smart Nature initiatives using technologies like IoT AI and spatial analytics.
- Design develop and maintain GIS systems and geospatial solutions.
- Integrate GIS functionality into existing and new applications.
- Define and structure geospatial datasets layers and services.
- Support the development of geo web services for internal and external use.
- Ensure high-quality geocoding vector/raster processing and data transformation workflows.
- Design and maintain geodatabases using SQL Server and related technologies.
- Write and optimize queries for geospatial data environments.
- Manage and manipulate vector and raster datasets for multiple use cases.
- Ensure data quality consistency and performance across GIS systems.
- Perform spatial and geoprocessing analyses.
- Support advanced GIS data transformations and analytical workflows.
- Apply geospatial tools and techniques to support decision-making.
- Translate functional requirements into technical GIS implementations.
- Contribute to GIS solution architecture and system design.
- Support the setup of GIS environments in cloud platforms (Azure AWS).
- Work with serverless and cloud-based geospatial architectures.
- Work with APIs and services from Digitaal Vlaanderen and base registries.
- Support integration of external geospatial data sources.
- Ensure interoperability between GIS systems and enterprise platforms.
- Collaborate with analysts developers architects and stakeholders.
- Participate in Agile/SCRUM development cycles.
- Support testing debugging and iterative development processes.
- Ensure alignment between business requirements and GIS implementations.
- Proven experience in GIS system development.
- Minimum 3 years of experience with:
- ESRI ArcGIS Desktop Server and Online
- Geodatabases in SQL Server
- Development and deployment of GIS systems
- Geo web services setup and management
- Strong experience in geocoding spatial data formats and geospatial data processing.
- Experience with:
- SQL Server geodatabases
- Geoprocessing tools and spatial analysis techniques
- Vector and raster data manipulation
- API integration and data services
- Ability to perform coding testing and debugging in programming environments relevant to GIS.
- Native-level Dutch proficiency (CEFR C2).
- Experience with Agile/SCRUM methodologies.
- Experience with GIS solution architecture and translating functional requirements into technical designs.
- Experience with cloud-based GIS environments (Azure AWS).
- Experience with serverless architectures and cloud-native geospatial systems.
- Knowledge of VertiGIS FME QGIS GeoServer PostGIS and Python (ArcPy).
- Experience with geospatial APIs from Digitaal Vlaanderen and base registries.
- Knowledge of ITIL processes.
- GIS certification (nice to have).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to design scalable and maintainable GIS solutions.
- Strong technical understanding of spatial data structures and systems.
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Structured and detail-oriented approach to system design and implementation.
You will work within a Digitalisation & Innovation unit supporting the management and protection of large natural areas in Flanders. The organization focuses on:

- Hybrid model with at least 1 onsite day per week in Brussels-North.
