In 1942, Israel's first Prime-Minister, David Ben-Gurion, established The Aguda Lemaan HaChayal in Israel, which is known as The Association for the Wellbeing of Israel’s Soldiers (AWIS). Initially, the organization was charged with rounding up donations of blankets for the young Jewish men and women of the fledgling Jewish Brigade.
