E-discovery is the process of sifting through hundreds of thousands of pages of e-mails, documents, and archives. Clients have included law firms such as DLA Piper and corporations such as FedEx and Cisco. Its software is sold through HP and other vendors. The company was founded in 2004 with funding from Sequoia Capital, Redpoint Ventures, DAG Ventures, and Northgate Capital. Clearwell was acquired in 2011 by Symantec for $390 million as part of an effort by that company to build up its legal software holdings.
