JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/ Objective

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves their families and their community. ESHs Compass Elementary School Programaligns with our mission by providing high-quality programs and services within community centers and school partnerships.

Reporting to the Program Directorthe Youth Educatoris responsible for designing and leading diverse enrichment Youth Educatorwill offer a wide variety of activities including homework help robotics team sports karate dance and music. As a member of the Compass Elementary Teamthe Youth Educatoris expected to guide youth through enrichment and recreational activities that support their academic social and emotional development.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Program Director theYouth Educator will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

• Identify create and facilitate age-appropriate theme-based lesson plans and activities.
• Work as part of a collaborative team providing support to any specialist implementing activities.
• Prepare thelearning working environment by creating a welcoming space that exhibits participants work.
• Build positive relations with youth and adults to serve as a role model with respect to demeanor communication and behavior.
• Ensure the health safety and well-being of participants in the program by closely supervising all activities.
• Assist in participants enrollment recording and submitting daily attendance records and other required documents to the program director.
• Inspect daily all facilities (including shared spaces) equipment and supplies; be sure all are accounted for and put away at the end of each day.
• Demonstrate commitment toleadership development community building and community organizing as strategies for social change.
• Organize storage areas and control the use of materials equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse and to minimize the time required for distribution and collection
• Maintain accurate program documentation (incident/accident/behavior reports attendance & sign-in / sign-out sheets).
• Understand and communicate the East Side House Settlement mission and the goals of the Compass program to the participants and community members.
• Actively participate in all aspects of professional development including scheduled supervision team meetings pre-service training and additional paid professional development training.
• Demonstrate key competencies including initiative teamwork cooperation preparedness professionalism reliability and a willingness to improve continuously.
• Organize and participate in external special events to promote the Agencys mission and image cultivate relationships and generate broad support.

Qualifications

To perform this position successfully the Youth Educator must be able to fulfill all the elements of the job description to the highest standard and be able to work well with colleagues in a high-energy and collaborative work environment. Additional qualifications include:

Education / Experience

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• Some college preferred.
• Must have experience working with elementary schools preferably in a racially ethnically and socioemotionally diverse urban community.
• Minimum of two years of work-related skill knowledge or experience required.
• A genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills through training opportunities and field practice.
• Possess the ability to engage and lead activities in your area of specialty; strong communication skills strong organizational skills excellent judgment and the ability to work in a team in various environments.
• Candidates possessing skills in foreign languages visual arts music or performing arts are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with all participants while remaining professional at all times
• Must be able to motivate the students while setting an example in all areas including responsibility timeliness organization attendance and most importantly professionalism.
• Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
• Being bilingual is a plus.

Clearance

This position is responsible for supervising and managing the performance of all designated employees assigned to the position within the department.

Physical Demands

This role may involve occasional lifting or moving of items up to 25 pounds and routine use of standard office equipment. Reasonable accommodationmay be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Expected Work Schedule
The work schedule expected for this position is: Monday Friday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm as aligned to the needs of the program/ service. The schedule may be adjusted based on ESHs operational needs with notice provided whenever possible.
