The Property and Casualty Underwriter (Fire Protection) is responsible for managing and growing a specialized portfolio of fire protection contractor accounts including businesses involved in the installation service and repair of fire suppression systems extinguishers and sprinkler systems. This role evaluates risks unique to fire protection operationssuch as system design installation quality code compliance and ongoing maintenance exposureswhile analyzing underwriting data to determine appropriate coverage terms and pricing. The Underwriter partners closely with brokers and stakeholders to deliver customized compliant and profitable insurance solutions.
What will your job entail
Underwrite new and renewal fire protection contractor business by reviewing applications policy forms broker endorsement requests and supporting documentation in accordance with underwriting guidelines.
Evaluate risks associated with fire protection operations including system installation inspection and testing services repair work design liability and compliance with NFPA codes and local regulations.
Assess contractor operations for exposure related to faulty installation system failure property damage and bodily injury.
Determine risk acceptability by analyzing factors such as scope of services (e.g. sprinkler installation fire alarm systems kitchen suppression systems) project types (residential commercial industrial) geographic exposure and claims history.
Establish appropriate coverage limits terms conditions and pricing based on risk characteristics and delegated underwriting authority.
Accept modify or decline risks based on technical underwriting analysis and company risk appetite.
Deliver high-quality underwriting service for both new and renewal business with strong technical expertise and adherence to underwriting standards.
Ensure compliance with state regulations fire safety codes and carrier guidelines specific to fire protection contractors.
Actively manage portfolio performance including growth retention and profitability of assigned accounts.
Develop premium forecasts and support business planning to meet financial and production targets.
Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers agents and program partners specializing in contractor and fire protection risks.
Collaborate with internal teams to manage submissions quotes binds and policy issuance accurately and efficiently.
Identify new business opportunities maximize retention and conduct proactive renewal reviews.
Participate in marketing initiatives industry events and fire protection trade associations to enhance market presence.
Stay current on industry trends regulatory updates emerging risks (e.g. system technology changes evolving fire codes) and underwriting best practices.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelors or Masters degree in Risk Management Business Administration Engineering or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
Minimum of 5 years of Property & Casualty underwriting experience preferably focused on contractors construction risks or fire protection services.
Strong understanding of exposures related to installation inspection and maintenance of fire suppression and sprinkler systems.
Knowledge of NFPA standards fire safety regulations and contractor risk profiles is highly preferred.
Proven analytical decision-making and portfolio management skills.
Excellent communication negotiation and relationship management capabilities.
Licenses & Certifications
Must meet state requirements for Property & Casualty and/or surplus lines licensing.
