Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.This posting is for a Transportation Worker III in the Rockingham County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance repair and construction of state-maintained roads. Routinely operate at least two pieces of equipment (bulldozer excavator backhoe skid steer tandem dump truck forklift front end loader tractor trailer motor grader roller Athey loader A boom mower sweeper pan) in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks such as hauling asphalt aggregate or soil materials; snow and ice operations; compacting asphalt compacting embankments sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Employee hired into this position is expected to have a working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Manual labor includes but is not limited to operating chain saws shoveling driving trucks and litter pickup. Additional work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices drainage/ditch maintenance pipe and drainage structure installation and flagging operations. Employee in this position is expected to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Work requires ability to climb bend traverse steep and uneven terrain and exposure to extreme temperature conditions. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly and exerting up 100lbs of force occasionally. Position is subject to emergency call back and may require work during nontraditional work hours including nights weekends and holidays.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As part of the hiring approval process NCDOT will run a driver license check after conducting interviews but prior to offering a position.
Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles:
No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
Valid current North Carolina drivers license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current valid appropriate drivers license from their state of residence.)
If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state drivers license in the past ten years the drivers record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state drivers license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.
Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance pipe installation or asphalt patching.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe tandem dump truck motor grader front end loader forklift force feed loader asphalt distributor asphalt patcher crack sealing machine track excavators skid steer or sweeper.
Minimum Education and Experience
