How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)
SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Test Technician Controls you will support the development testing and validation of control systems and prototype HVAC products. Working closely with Controls Engineers R&D and New Product Introduction (NPI) teams you will independently set up and execute laboratory testing troubleshoot electrical and electronic systems and maintain laboratory equipment and documentation. This role plays a critical part in ensuring product performance reliability and compliance while supporting both new product development and sustaining engineering activities.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX your core responsibilities will be:
- Testing & Validation
- Coordinate daily laboratory testing activities with minimal supervision to support project timelines and engineering objectives.
- Collaborate with Controls Engineers R&D NPI and laboratory personnel to develop test plans procedures and schedules.
- Independently set up configure and operate laboratory test equipment and systems.
- Execute benchtop laboratory and product-level testing to support new product development validation and sustaining engineering efforts.
- Perform software loading parameter configuration and firmware updates for control devices and embedded systems.
- Collect document and communicate test results observations and recommendations to engineering teams.
- Prepare and maintain test procedures reports schedules and supporting documentation.
- Troubleshooting & Technical Support
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical electronic and control system issues to support testing and product development activities.
- Read and interpret control logic wiring diagrams schematics and technical documentation.
- Support root cause investigations and corrective actions related to control system performance and testing issues.
- Assist engineering teams with prototype evaluation troubleshooting and performance verification.
3. Laboratory Operations & Equipment Management
- Maintain laboratory equipment instrumentation and test systems including calibration status preventive maintenance and inventory control.
- Support the development documentation and continuous improvement of Engineering Lab Work Instructions and testing procedures.
- Assist in evaluating and recommending laboratory equipment purchases calibration requirements and operating procedures.
- Ensure laboratory equipment and test systems are maintained in a safe organized and operational condition.
- Support internal and external laboratory audits and assist with compliance activities as required.
4. Prototype Fabrication & Development Support
- Build modify and support prototype control systems wire harnesses and test assemblies.
- Perform electronics fabrication activities including soldering wiring and assembly of prototype components.
- Support engineering development efforts through fabrication testing and validation of experimental systems and concepts.
5. Continuous Improvement
- Participate in initiatives to improve laboratory operations testing efficiency documentation practices and product quality.
- Recommend process improvements related to testing methods equipment utilization and laboratory organization.
- Support the implementation of engineering and quality best practices.
What we are looking for (Experience Knowledge Skills Abilities Education)
We each bring something to the table and we are looking for someone who has:
Required Experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of electrical and electronic principles and hands-on troubleshooting techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret control logic diagrams wiring schematics technical drawings and engineering documentation.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation used in electrical and electronic testing including oscilloscopes multimeters power supplies and soldering equipment.
- Experience setting up executing and documenting engineering test plans.
- Practical experience with electronics fabrication soldering wiring and prototype assembly.
- Strong organizational documentation and computer skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects priorities and deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Preferred Experience Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Experience with surface-mount technology (SMT) soldering techniques.
- Experience working with Modbus BACnet or other industrial communication protocols.
- Experience supporting products subject to CSA UL or other regulatory certification requirements.
- Working knowledge of programming languages and development tools including LabVIEW C C# Flutter Python or similar technologies.
- Experience working in HVAC controls automation or product development environments.
- Familiarity with embedded controls firmware updates and electronic system integration.
- Experience supporting laboratory audits calibration programs and quality systems.
Education & Certifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree or technical certification in Computer Engineering Technology Electrical Engineering Technology Mechatronics Automation or a related technical discipline preferred.
Physical Demands
- Frequent computer and keyboard use; continuous use of computer monitors and engineering software tools.
- Ability to work in laboratory and manufacturing environments.
- Occasional lifting of testing equipment components or materials as required.
- Ability to use hand tools soldering equipment laboratory instrumentation and electronic testing devices.
- Ability to stand walk bend and lift equipment components and materials as required.
- Ability to safely work with electrical and electronic systems in a laboratory environment.
Travel & Working Environment
- Primarily office and laboratory-based work environment.
- Laboratory environment requires the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including foot eye and hearing protection as required.
- Occasional exposure to energized equipment electrical systems and laboratory testing environments.
- Minimal travel required (less than 10%) including visits to suppliers training events and other company facilities.
