The Opportunity

Cornell University is searching for its next Head Coach to lead one of the Ivy Leagues most exciting varsity sailing programs - and to help shape what comes next.

Cornell Womens Sailing has finished in the top 5 at the ICSA Womens Fleet Race National Championships in each of the last two years claimed its first-ever national singlehanded title in 2025 and competed in 38 regattas this past season across every format the sport offers. The alumni base is organized engaged and actively investing in the programs future and the right head coach will find genuine partners in building something lasting.

The salary range for this position is $84000 to $90000;final offer will depend on relevant experience skills and qualifications. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

What You Will Do

You will coach recruit and build on the shores of beautiful Cayuga Lake from one of the finest sailing facilities in the Northeast - with an extensive fleet in excellent condition a modern boathouse and open water minutes from central campus. Key responsibilities include:

• Recruit develop and mentor highly competitive student-athletes for the Womens Varsity Sailing program while serving as advisor to the Mens Club Sailing team.
• Lead all coaching and program operations including 38 annual regattas recruiting scheduling travel budgeting and compliance with NCAA Ivy League MAISA and ICSA regulations.
• Oversee fleet and facility operations by managing fleet maintenance and collaborating with the Merrill Family Sailing Center Manager and staff to support shared facility priorities.
• Provide strategic program leadership by hiring and supervising assistant coaches cultivating alumni parent and donor relationships and supporting fundraising initiatives to advance long-term program success.

Our home is a true competitive advantage. The 5466-square-foot two-story Merrill Family Sailing Center sits directly on Cayuga Lake offering stunning waterfront views and direct lake access.

Managed by a dedicated Sailing Center Manager the facility provides the team with dedicated meeting locker and equipment spaces while sharing the boathouse with Cornells educational and community sailing programs - creating unique opportunities to engage with students alumni and the broader community.

Cayuga Lake offers an exceptional training venue. Northerly winds produce steady breeze and waves ideal for boat tuning and speed while southerly winds create flat water and shifty conditions common at many ICSA venues preparing our sailors to compete in a wide range of racing environments.

The program maintains a varsity fleet of 36 boats (18 FJs and 18 420s) with the 420 fleet most recently replaced in 2023.

On the technical side we are also looking for:

• Bachelors degree with at least 3 years of coaching experience at a relevant level and institution type with ICSA experience strongly preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Demonstrated passion & proven success for sailing and intentional development of coaching skill - technical and tactical - along with a track record of developing student-athletes and contributing to the sport in a leadership capacity
• Evidence of supporting student-athlete academic success cross-cultural awareness and an inclusive team environment
• Real energy for recruiting - and the ability to recruit and develop student-athletes from varied backgrounds deploying resources strategically and engaging the alumni network appropriately
• Strong written and spoken communication genuine enthusiasm for the external-facing parts of the role and demonstrated success in or capacity for fundraising
• Relevant coaching certifications and education
• Knowledge of NCAA Ivy and ICSA rules and regulations as well as proficiency with computers and required software.
• Given this role will participate in driving responsibilities must have and maintain a clean and valid drivers license
