POSITION OVERVIEW

The Elementary Physical Education Teacher provides a comprehensive engaging and developmentally appropriate physical education program for students in grades PreK5. This position promotes physical fitness motor skill development teamwork sportsmanship healthy lifestyles and lifelong wellness habits through standards-based instruction and active participation. The Elementary Physical Education Teacher creates a safe inclusive and positive learning environment where all students are encouraged to develop confidence cooperation self-discipline and personal responsibility.

The position requires the ability to differentiate instruction and activities to meet the diverse academic social emotional behavioral and physical needs of students while utilizing research-based instructional and assessment practices. The teacher collaborates with classroom teachers specialists administrators families and support staff to support student growth and overall school success. The Elementary Physical Education Teacher contributes positively to school culture through active participation in professional learning communities school improvement efforts wellness initiatives and site-based decision-making processes.

The Elementary Physical Education Teacher may also assist with school-wide wellness programs field day activities safety instruction and the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles across the school community.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelors degree in Physical Education Elementary Education or related field; Masters degree preferred.
2. Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.
3. Washington State endorsement in Health and Fitness/Physical Education required.
4. Elementary Education endorsement preferred.
5. Demonstrated understanding of research-based instructional strategies and assessment practices that support effective instruction.
6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the district may find appropriate and acceptable.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Instruction and Student Learning

• Plan and deliver engaging standards-aligned physical education instruction for students in grades PreK5.
• Teach movement skills physical fitness concepts coordination cooperation sportsmanship personal responsibility and healthy lifestyle habits.
• Develop lesson plans and activities aligned to district curriculum state standards and identified learning targets.
• Utilize research-based instructional strategies and best practices in physical education.
• Differentiate instruction and physical activities to meet the developmental and individual needs of students.
• Structure activities and pacing appropriate to the age and ability levels of learners.
• Clearly communicate expectations procedures safety rules and learning targets to students.
• Use questioning modeling guided practice and active participation to support student engagement and learning.
• Promote student confidence inclusion teamwork and positive peer interactions.
• Conduct ongoing formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
• Maintain accurate student records and assessment data as required.
• Encourage student goal setting self-assessment and reflection related to physical activity and wellness.
• Integrate technology and digital resources into instruction when appropriate.

Learning Environment and Safety

• Establish and maintain a safe orderly positive and inclusive learning environment conducive to active participation and learning.
• Ensure proper supervision and safe use of equipment facilities and instructional spaces.
• Inspect and maintain equipment and instructional materials to ensure safety and usability.
• Organize classroom gymnasium outdoor areas routines and transitions to maximize instructional time and student safety.
• Monitor student behavior consistently and address concerns respectfully and effectively.
• Follow district procedures related to student safety health emergency response and injury reporting.

Collaboration and Communication

• Collaborate with classroom teachers specialists counselors administrators paraeducators and support staff to support student success and wellness.
• Participate actively in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) staff meetings data teams and school improvement initiatives.
• Communicate effectively with families regarding student progress participation and wellness-related activities.
• Support school-wide wellness initiatives assemblies field day events and other student activities as assigned.
• Participate cooperatively in site-based management and shared decision-making processes.
• Maintain positive and professional relationships with students staff families and community members.

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain professional competence through participation in professional development workshops conferences and ongoing learning.
• Remain current in instructional practices physical education pedagogy and health and fitness standards.
• Demonstrate professionalism dependability ethical conduct and collaboration in all interactions.

• Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

• Work is performed in gymnasiums classrooms outdoor activity spaces and school environments with frequent interaction with students and staff.
• Frequent standing walking running bending kneeling lifting reaching demonstrating physical activities and active supervision of students.
• Ability to lift carry move and set up physical education equipment and instructional materials.
• May be required to travel between buildings and attend workshops conferences trainings or school events.
• Required to work flexible hours including occasional evenings for school events and activities.
• Expected to prepare instructional spaces and equipment before the start of school and assist with end-of-year inventory and equipment storage responsibilities.
