Job Summary

The Survey Field Technician works closely with the survey engineering and operations teams to provide accurate and timely field surveying and construction layout support for asphalt concrete and dirt/pipe operations. Responsibilities include assisting with construction staking topographic surveys data collection and other field surveying activities while supporting projects across the company. The Survey Field Technician is detail-oriented adaptable and eager to learn new technologies with the ability to develop the skills necessary to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists with performing layout for private commercial and government projects.
  • Utilizes survey instruments and surveying software to perform calculations and complete layouts including grade staking.
  • Collects downloads and manages survey data .
  • Works with project superintendents and foremen to identify and resolve discrepancies in drawings sites staking etc.
  • Assists in providing company-wide surveying information to project teams and other departments as needed.
  • Operates a company vehicle and maintains a valid drivers license.
  • Stays current on surveying technology equipment and best practices.
  • Exercises discretion regarding project confidentiality.

Other Duties/Responsibilities

  • Uses AutoCAD software and Trimble Business Center as needed.
  • Assists others in department as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate GPS Total Station and other surveying equipment.
  • Ability to utilize surveying software programs.
  • Working knowledge of surveying principles practices and techniques with a general understanding of engineering planning and land development.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints plans and construction documents and identify discrepancies.
  • Strong mathematical skills including algebra geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to collect analyze and accurately document survey data and prepare clear concise field notes.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy and quality.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers customers and project teams.
  • Demonstrates professionalism integrity sound judgment and respect for confidential information.
  • Proven organization dependability flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining productivity and accuracy.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Maintains a valid drivers license with the ability and willingness to travel to job sites as needed.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma GED or equivalent.
  • Survey Technician Certification or willingness to work toward acquiring certification.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting/Carrying: Up to 50 lbs frequently
  • Pushing/Pulling: Up to 50 lbs frequently
  • Movement Requirements: Frequent standing walking bending squatting kneeling twisting climbing crawling and reaching above shoulder level; occasional sitting and keyboarding.
  • Use of Hands: Frequent use of hands for handling equipment and materials.

Working Environment

  • Individual will be working primarily in the field with occasional office tasks (90/10) with a primary emphasis on survey related field work.
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat and cold dust wet surfaces uneven terrain and standing on concrete.
  • Works long hours and potentially 6 days a week with the understanding nights could be needed.
  • Travels up to 90-mile radius from the main office.
  • Interaction with internal departments (e.g. Safety Foremen Superintendents Project Management).
