Working/Functional Title

Surgery Nurse - 3rd shift

Position Summary

Provides patient care for ill and injured animals in the Surgery unit of the Veterinary Medical Center. This position works primarily in the operating rooms of the Small Animal Clinic with occasional work in Large Animal Surgery Anesthesia Support Center and Emergency and Critical Care. The position instructs and demonstrates techniques to students assists students and clinicians in their work and maintains supplies equipment and cleanliness of hospital areas.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care surgery anesthesia drug-dosing and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Experience as a veterinary technician in an educational setting.

This is an overnight shift with rotating weekends.

Will be required to lift medical equipment and animals into cages; carry animals between cages and exam tables/gurneys; push carts
containing animals and equipment to other areas of the hospital; climb stairs carrying lab samples; restrain animals. Lifting of up to 50lbs
individually or 150lbs as a team.

Summary of Health Risks

Working with animals or unfixed tissue. May wear respirator. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases.
