What you will do

  • Supervise and direct staff to operate fossil fuel fired units in a safe efficient and economical manner consistent with company policies procedures and best practices.
  • Identify and implement alternative plans and actions in response to changing market/load demands and operating conditions with consideration of economics safety and equipment.
  • Assure generating units are operated within design parameters to meet load requirements.
  • Coordinate daily preventative and emergent maintenance tasks across multiple departments and functions.

What you bring

  • Minimum of 6 years of journeyman level experience in Power Plant Operations or equivalent operating experience in a related field
  • Requires the ability to pass background check for Critical Infrastructure Protection access
  • Willingness to work a rotating shift work schedule (including nights weekends and holidays)

Position Description

To supervise shift operating personnel supporting the daily operations of all Tucson Power Production plant sites in the performance of their duties as necessary to generate electrical energy in a safe environmentally compliant efficient and reliable manner.

Position-Related Responsibilities

  • Authorized and is responsible to hire promote assign and direct employees and monitors activities; including safety prioritizing workflow allocation staffing/scheduling and performance reviews.
  • Provides direction to employees; resolves technical questions and employee relation issues to provide accurate and consistent direction and employee performance reviews and provides feedback to employees during mid-cycle updates; provides direction to employees; monitors workflow to minimize backlog and customer complaints.
  • Applies knowledge of assigned area and overall plant processes to safely resolve maintenance and operations problems.
  • Reviews area operations to identify processes/procedures/operations problems considering time equipment and tools/materials costs.
  • Recognizes and anticipates employee training needs to ensure that all team employees have skills necessary to ensure competency in all aspects of the job.
  • Provides assessment of employee training needs; recommends training plan and ensures employees obtain appropriate training as facilitates the signing off of qualification books for union employees.
  • Monitors the economic operations of all equipment and takes corrective action as necessary to maintain optimum efficiency. Coordinates and interfaces with other Power Generation sections to ensure maintenance and operations activities are scheduled effectively.
  • Ensures Unit performs within pre-determined regulatory and design parameters.
  • Assures the execution of dispatching directives regarding generation limits and switching procedures.
  • Supports the loads/requirements of the system and performs required switching safely and accurately.
  • Administers the Protective Clearance Procedure (LOTO).
  • Oversees and directs all plant activities including maintenance functions at times when other supervisory personnel are not on duty.
  • Identifies viable alternatives and plans activities to limit time delays equipment downtime and load knowledge of plant processes by considering potential impact of all activities.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate records and recordkeeping group budget to ensure cost-effective use of resources.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date personnel budget and job cost costs and analyzes actual cost variances from budget and explains differences.
  • This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.

Management Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the Companys management principles policies and programs are consistently practiced and continually support the Affirmative Action Plan.
  • Comply with and administer the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Assume fiduciary responsibility for operating the business and provide recommendations on cost improvement measures.
  • Ensure that the Performance Management program is administered uniformly and effectively.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid drivers license in good standing
  • Willingness to work a rotating shift work schedule
  • Minimum six (6) years of journeyman level experience in Power Plant Operations or equivalent operating experience in a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of prior supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience in a fossil fired power plants including:
  • Combustion Turbines
  • Rankine steam cycle
  • Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines

Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of:

  • Plant processes and operations
  • Equipment parts and plant layout
  • Budget preparation and analysis techniques
  • Principles and practices of supervision
  • Labor agreement terms and conditions
  • Computer skills necessary to complete job requirements
  • Regulatory requirements
  • TEP policies and procedures
