Job Summary

Position Title: Substation Physical Designer

Location: Birmingham AL 35243 USA

Duration: 3 Years

Schedule: Standard

Payrate: $33/hr. on W2

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

  • Create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for Transmission and Distribution electrical substation projects.
  • Develop and modify scaled drawings and layouts including foundation layouts grounding layouts conduit layouts switchgear assembly layouts substation layouts switch house layouts and electrical bus designs.
  • Produce engineering drawings using AutoCAD Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Map 3D.
  • Prepare material specifications and generate material requirements for substation design packages.
  • Specify and order stock non-stock and shop-fabricated materials for substation projects.
  • Transmit drawing packages and supporting documentation using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal system.
  • Coordinate and communicate with engineers project teams and other departments involved in substation design and construction.
  • Work with manufacturers and vendors to resolve equipment and material-related issues.
  • Provide design support to Substation Construction Field Services Project Management and Substation Maintenance teams.
  • Participate in site visits including pre-construction meetings construction support and post-construction reviews.
  • Ensure designs meet company standards with emphasis on safety quality scheduling and cost efficiency.
  • Travel to project sites as required including occasional overnight travel.

Requirement:

Education

  • Bachelors degree in engineering or engineering technology degree -OR- associate degree with at least 5 years of related industry experience -OR- High school diploma with significant related industry experience of at least 8 years

Experience

  • Strong understanding of electrical substation equipment is preferred.
  • Experience in Transmission and /or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred.
  • Good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the National Electric Safety Code National Electric Code and OSHA safe operating practices is preferred.
  • Ability to create electrical Substation Physical drawings from a single line or three line diagram is preferred.
  • Ability to create/manipulate 2D drawings and 3D models for electrical Substations.
  • Experience using 3D modeling software (SDS Inventor Autodesk Inventor or Autodesk 3D (P4A) is preferred.
  • AutoCAD training or experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with document management & estimating systems preferred.
  • Experience using Primavera (P6) progress reporting software preferred.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required.

  • Must be willing to travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.
