BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P QS SUBSTATION & METER SUBSTATION Department of the P SUBSTATION & METER Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Bargaining Unit vacancy available. (Role: Non-Exempt)

JOB FUNCTION:

Constructs remodels and maintains substations vaults and supporting Company facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Fundamental Responsibilities:

  • As a Substation Electrician at the maximum level performs the following duties. As a Substation Electrician at lower levels performs the following duties under direction or direct supervision in accordance with the various stages of training.
  • Constructs new and remodels existing substations vaults and supporting facilities. Installs or removes transformers switchgear circuit breakers regulators and similar equipment. Works as required in general construction work for substations such as carpentry concrete and steel work.
  • Installs splices terminates maintains and replaces non-leaded cables related to substation work.
  • Inspects tests services overhauls troubleshoots wires and repairs transformers switchgear circuit breakers regulators and similar equipment.
  • Does electric and gas welding and cutting as required for construction and maintenance of substations.
  • Works on energized equipment and lines using protective equipment as required.
  • Directs work of personnel in lower classifications on any or all of the above operations.
  • Uses hand power hydraulic & pneumatic tools such as hammers saws screwdrivers pliers wrenches drills impact guns/wrenches etc.
  • Drives company vehicles. May drive a truck carrying personnel and/or materials.
  • Lifts and carries materials tools and equipment.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs similar and incidental duties as required.
  • Assume an emergency management role as assigned and perform specific assignments or functions as needed in an event of an emergency not to include routine trouble calls/callouts.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to identify and distinguish the difference between colors including shades hues and tints. (for electrician related positions).Must be able to pass Bureau of Motor Carriers physical examination.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii commercial drivers license. Must meet the standards for driving positions statedin the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.

These employees/applicants must also meet the following requirements:

    • Must pass job sample test.
    • Must be able to satisfactorily complete HECO pole climbing class.
    • Must be able to satisfactorily complete on-the-job training (OJT) within 2 years.

    • Must be able to satisfactorily complete the following related training:
    • Independent Course Study within 1 year. (See Attachment 2.)
    • Home Study Module within 1 year. (See Attachment 3.)
    • Must pass Company Written Job Knowledge Test before progressing to the 2nd to the last step of the pay schedule.

A letter of acknowledgement (dated 01/19/2004) outlining details of the above requirements will be reviewed with applicants/employees.

Employees/applicants who meet the following requirement shall start at the steps of the pay schedule indicated below and progress accordingly:

    • External Licensed Journeyman Electrician - Successful completion of an accredited Commercial/Industrial Electrician Program AND must have a certified State of Hawaii Electricians license (start at step 4/D of the pay ay schedule $48.96); OR
    • Completion of HECO Lineman Apprentice program (start at step 5/E of the pay schedule $50.81); OR
    • Equivalent training and experience at HECO or other Electrical Utility (start at step 5/E of the pay schedule $50.81); OR
    • Graduate of Substation Electrician Apprentice Program; OR Equivalent training and experience AND must pass Company Written Job Knowledge Test (start at step 7/G of the pay schedule $57.15)
  • Must successfully complete related training utilizing AVO books (for progression to Substation Electrician Thereafter).
