Duties and Responsibilities (* denotes essential functions):

1. * Exercises leadership and supports students responsible for the delivery of student media programs which are aimed to improve students journalistic integrity writing literacy and interpersonal and leadership skills in a media setting.

2. * Provides editorial mentorship and fosters professional development by guiding student editors in reading evaluating and selecting literary/journalistic submissions.

3. * Advises students on the structure and knowledge of journalistic practice in a multimodal media environment to gather information write edit and design digital media platforms (inclusive of print online and broadcasting).

4. * Conducts training on the ethics and responsibilities of the press or broadcast media writing and editing principles interviewing techniques and fundamental design to ensure students have an overall understanding of contemporary media.

5. * Initiates and supports policies that will ensure that students have the freedom to establish and operate student media free from institutional censorship that reflects the constitutional right of the free press and adheres to professional and ethical standards prescribed by the Society of Professional Journalism.

6. * Guides student staff in establishing implementing applying and evaluating a responsible editorial/broadcast policy and management style that reflect the best ideals of the student best practices and sound academic processes.

7. * Ensures collaboration between student media programs and teams especially student volunteers student employees and others that promote the co-curricular experience and out-of-classroom learning.

8. * Exercises budgetary discretion and accountability for delegated accounts.

9. * Develops implements and evaluates a program training curriculum for student media that is based on sound editorial principles and student development theory that results in students producing a better-quality media product in the out-of-classroom setting.

10. * Provides organizational advising counseling and training to assigned student media organizations student media leaders and student program staff members in order to improve students interpersonal and leadership skills to work effectively within organizational settings. Uses industry and peer best practice standards in the delivery of the program curriculum.

11. * Assesses student learning in the areas of student leadership and student organizations. Uses student leadership development theories to identify critical skills and to evaluate skill attainment as well as personal learning outcomes for students.

12. * Researches and collects data related to student media programs including digital and internet-based communication channels student leadership organizational development and in areas that will contribute to short and long-term program development.

13. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with relevant academic programs particularly Communication Speech Journalism English and Art to maximize student participation in student media programs and to promote students abilities to interrelate classroom and practical publication learning.

14. Accesses professional resources within the local and national community to support the programming curriculum.

15. Serves as the liaison for Student Life and Development in collaboration with UH Office of Communications and UH News Department of Public Safety Office of Risk Management College of Social Sciences particularly Journalism Communicology and other key University departments to ensure lines of communication are open as it pertains to student media.

16. * Performs proper oversight for assigned workspace(s) and reports facility maintenance needs to appropriate facilities staff in a timely manner.

17. * Assists in developing and facilitating training in the administration of assigned student media programs to direct reports as well as support to other units as requested or needed.

18. * Provides training supervision guidance and coaching to ensure optimal staff performance.

19. Participates via institutional and/or personal membership in relevant professional associations appropriate to the position.

20. Keeps abreast of trends and best practice standards by participating in professional development opportunities.

21. Works beyond normal business hours including evenings weekends and/or holidays as needed.

22. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in journalism broadcast communication English advertising education or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for journalism and media publication or providing educational services or counseling of which at least one (1) year must include student media student activities or co-curricular programming experience; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.

2. Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of student media student activities or co-curricular educational programming as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.

3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with student media student activities or co-curricular educational programming.

4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.

5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team members and individuals.

7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

8. If applicable for supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.

9. Ability to plan organize and lead administrative and organizational processes as applied to the administration of programs services and/or operations including a demonstrated ability to apply computer technology to the production of student media.

10. Ability to effectively plan schedule and review the work of others and to provide coaching feedback and guidance when necessary.

11. Demonstrated ability in program development skills program administration implementation and evaluation particularly in media.

12. Ability to evaluate student media programs within the context of student development and skill attainment.

13. Ability to interpret and apply legal and policy provisions to situations consistently.

14. Ability to prepare and administer a budget review financial reports and discern trends and concerns from such reports.

15. Ability to work outside of normal working hours including evenings weekends and holidays as directed.


Desirable Qualifications

1. Masters Degree from a college or university of recognized standing in Journalism Communication English college student services higher education administration business administration education counseling or a related field.

2. Four years of progressively responsible professional experience in media particularly student media university/college co-curricular education or related area of which at least two (2) years includes supervisory and administrative experience.

3. Skilled in team-building and developing collaborative partnerships.

4. Demonstrated ability to train and develop others.
