Student Employee (FWSBudget Eligible), Learning Support Systems Brighton Campus Multiple Vacancies

Function of Position:

Reporting to the Coordinator for Course-Based Learning Assistance Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders are current or recent MCC students who work with other students to help them to develop effective learning strategies and to become self-regulated learners. SI Leaders are embedded directly into a course to model best practices and serve as a liaison between faculty and students. SI Leaders lead weekly collaborative sessions outside of class time to help students with discipline-specific content learning strategies time-management and problem solving.

This position may be funded through Federal Work Study (FWS) and/or departmental budgetary funds depending on eligibility and departmental need. Federal Work Study applicants must be approved by the Financial Aid Office prior to employment consideration. If you are unsure of your FWS eligibility please contact Financial Aid before applying. Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

• Foster the development of independent intentional learners
• Help to identify and fill learning gaps with discipline specific content
• Help students understand and use effective learning strategies
• Provide support in one or more sections of a historically difficult course
• Attend class regularly
• Plan and lead group learning sessions outside of class
• Combine how to learn with what to learn to facilitate student learning help students better understand concepts or applications of course content and promote higher order thinking and problem solving
• Engage students in collaborative learning
• Foster independence in learning through the Socratic method and other questioning strategies
• Develop and nurture rapport with students peers and faculty
• Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters
• Attend ongoing professional development opportunities

Required Qualifications:

• Must be currently enrolled as a student at Monroe Community College
• Must maintain satisfactory academic progress and be in good academic standing
• Have completed the SI course with a B or better in a previous semester
• Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills
• Have a working knowledge of campus resources for academic success
• Receive a recommendation from the faculty member the SI Leader will support (this recommendation is verified by the SI Leader Faculty Reference Form)
• Federal Work Study eligibility is required for FWS-funded positions (must be approved by the Financial Aid Office prior to hire)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bilingual and able to read write and speak Spanish or other languages proficiently

Pay Rate: $16.00/hour

Hours per Week: Up to 20 hours/week
