About the program

The Mens Project is an initiative of Jesuit Social Services launched in 2017. It provides leadership on the reduction of violence and other harmful behaviours prevalent among boys and men and builds approaches to improve their wellbeing and keep families and communities safe.

Our vision is for good men respectful relationships and safe communities.

We will achieve this by:

• research to understand the behaviours and underlying attitudes of men and boys including related to violence child sexual abuse and the well-being of men and boys themselves.
• promoting positive change around gender norms related to what it means to be a man in the 21st century as well as building skills to intervene to prevent violence; and
• developing innovative ways to stop cycles of violence and harmful behaviour among boys and men.

The Mens Project builds on Jesuit Social Services almost 50-year engagement with boys and men in trouble but it also involves us leading new work to reduce violence to improve the wellbeing of boys and men and to keep families and communities safe.

Jesuit Social Services through The Mens Project is partnering with Equimundo WOW Women of the World Foundation WOW Australia and other partners to engage men and boys in preventing violence and harm advancing gender equality and promoting care. The work is focused on building a positive vision of men and boys as caring connected and accountable and on the contribution they can make to safer healthier and more equal relationships and communities. It aims to address the gender norms and broader social and structural conditions that contribute to violence while building hope leadership and momentum towards lasting social change.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director The Mens Project this position will provide strategic leadership for The Mens Projects contribution to the Jesuit Social Services Equimundo and WOW partnership and its work in Australia. Working across Jesuit Social Services and with external partners the role will build influential relationships develop a shared direction and engage communities and decision-makers connecting Australian expertise with international learning to help translate ambition into practical and sustained action. The role will work to ensure that the initiative is locally grounded and reflects feminist and pro-feminist approaches to engaging men and boys; gender equality; violence prevention; survivor safety; care and accountability; First Nations leadership and culturally safe engagement; intersectionality; and the inclusion of LGBTQIA people and other priority communities.

This role will suit a candidate with the following skills and experience:

1. Relevant tertiary qualification/s and/or substantial senior leadership experience in program management partnerships social change gender equality violence prevention public policy international development major events human services or a related field.
2. Demonstrated experience leading complex multi-partner initiatives with national or international dimensions including governance planning budgets risk resources and interdependent delivery.
3. Strong understanding of gender equality feminist and pro-feminist approaches to engaging men and boys masculinities care violence prevention survivor safety and accountability.
4. Sound judgement in applying intersectional culturally safe child-safe and LGBTQIA-inclusive approaches including when engaging First Nations and other priority communities.
5. Excellent relationship development stakeholder engagement convening and negotiation skills. Able to influence senior leaders across community media business technology sport government philanthropy research and civil society. Able to build effective relationships with First Nations partners organisations representing priority communities and international organisations.
6. Highly organised adaptable and solutions-focused with strong judgement and interpersonal skills. Able to manage competing priorities dependencies and complexity across distributed teams while maintaining momentum.
7. Demonstrated experience coordinating and supporting project staff contractors and partners with the ability to prepare clear briefings communications and reports monitor progress and impact and contribute to funding sustainability and transition planning to support longer-term outcomes.
