• Vehicle Inspection: Conduct comprehensive safety and emissions checksincluding brakes steering suspension tires exhaust and fuel systems.
• Compliance & Documentation: Utilize state-approved diagnostic equipment and submit inspection results directly to the relevant state department (e.g. the Motor Vehicle Administration or State Police).
• Diagnosis & Maintenance: Identify damaged worn or unsafe parts provide repair estimates and communicate needed maintenance with service advisors or customers.
• Repair Execution: Complete mechanical repairs and conduct thorough re-inspections to ensure the vehicle passes all regulatory standards.

• State Certification: Must hold a valid state-issued Vehicle Inspector license (requirements and tests vary heavily by state such as Maryland State Inspection or NYVIP in New York).
• Automotive Experience: Typically requires 2-5 years of experience as an automotive technician mechanic or equivalent fleet maintenance work.
