Staff Data Engineer
Pleasanton, CA - USA
Job Summary
The Role
We deploy on customer terms SaaS multi-tenant SaaS single-tenant and on-premises across AWS Azure and GCP. Our customers are Fortune 500 finance teams who require data isolation auditability and compliance.
We are looking for a Staff Data Engineer to build and own the major subsystems of the data foundation the pipelines connectors and curated models that feed the platforms analytics and AI layers. You take the data architecture and standards set by the data lead and turn them into robust production-grade systems that dont break and dont lie about the numbers.
You own significant pieces of the platform end to end complex transformations over the warehouse source integrations for new customer systems and the reconciliation and lineage that prove the curated model ties back to source. This is a hands-on high-ownership engineering role with a clear path toward Senior Staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and own the major pipelines. Data-model transforms connectors lineage capture curated stores and orchestration DAGs. Own their performance reliability and cost and drive incremental and CDC-aware refresh so data stays fresh during a close cycle.
- Implement complex set-based transformations. Write correct then fast transformations over the warehouse on datasets large enough that the difference matters.
- Own source integration against the shared framework. Build source-to-model mappings for general ledger HRIS payroll AP schedules and event sources with maximum reuse.
- Handle messy source data and schema change. Design for variation up front so a schema change at a customer is a configuration problem rather than a code change.
- Guarantee reconciliation and lineage. Write data tests and reconciliation checks so every curated figure traces back to source.
- Collaborate and mentor. Agree data contracts with backend and AI teams review peers work and mentor senior and mid-level engineers.
Requirements
- Production data engineering. Typically 7 years or equivalent experience owning complex production pipelines end to end including their performance reliability and cost.
- Expert SQL and data modeling. Complex set-based transformations over a cloud warehouse (Snowflake BigQuery PostgreSQL or similar) and models other teams build on.
- dbt and orchestration in production. Real dbt projects with incremental models and Airflow or Dagster DAGs that are safe to rerun and backfill.
- Warehouse performance tuning. You know why a query is slow or expensive on large datasets and how to fix it.
- A bias toward correctness. Data tests reconciliation against source and lineage are core to how you work and your pipelines are idempotent and reproducible.
- Solid Python. Pipeline code tests and tooling that others can maintain.
Nice to have
- ERP and financial data. NetSuite SAP Oracle or Workday or finance data such as general ledger accounts payable payroll and HRIS.
- CDC and managed ingestion. Change-data-capture pipelines or tools like Fivetran.
- Messy source systems. Integrating real-world sources with inconsistent data and changing schemas while keeping downstream models stable.
- Multi-cloud and customer-hosted deployments. AWS Azure and GCP ideally with pipelines running inside customer environments under strict tenant isolation.
- Reusable integration frameworks. Connectors or mappings built as configuration on a shared framework.
- Golden and synthetic datasets. Built for regression testing.
