Description of Work

The Virology/Special Serology Unit of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health is currently accepting applications for a Medical Laboratory Technologist I vacancy. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a technologist in the Special Serology Laboratory at the NC State Laboratory of Public Health performing diagnostic testing of human specimens for detection of
vector-borne disease pathogens as well as pathogen testing of vector arthropod species. The primary methods used for detection is Enzyme Immunoassay EIA) and Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methods. This position will also be involved in performing new methods that are introduced in the Special Serology lab as well as arbovirus mosquito surveillance testing under BSL3 conditions. Laboratory duties this position performs includes specimen accessioning testing interpretation and shipping as well as provide assistance to other laboratory testing areas during outbreak responses.


The Special Serology Unit Medical Laboratory Technologist I will perform duties that include though not limited to the following:


Performs routine testing of clinical specimens for detection of various vector-borne diseases and vaccine preventable diseases using molecular and serologic methods.
Participates in the NCSLPH respiratory protection program to enable BSL-3 work and perform testing of mosquito pools under BSL-3 conditions
Performs instrument preventative maintenance activities including periodic (daily monthly quarterly etc.) procedures per manufacturers protocol
Participates in assay verifications and validations or other QA studies cross-trains in other virology sections to enable redundancy and participates in laboratory committees demonstrations and training of students
Works holiday and weekend hours in emergency response situations as need is determined by laboratory management

Salary Grade Range: $58265.00-$87396.00

Recruitment Range: $58265.00-$59471.00

The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Basic knowledge of biology anatomy and general laboratory practices

  • Skilled in using and troubleshooting laboratory labware and laboratory equipment

  • Able to perform manual test procedures that require use of equipment that require physical coordination.

  • Basic knowledge of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and how to take appropriate precautions to avoid infection

  • Ability to adhere to SOPs follow complex oral and written instructions and instruct others in complex technical procedures

Physical Requirements:
  • An occupational medical assessment may be required to determine your ability to safely work with biological chemical or radiological hazards.

  • This position: Works frequently with infectious disease agents that require the use of personal protective equipment such as a respiratory

  • Uses laboratory equipment requiring the ability to manipulate items with fingers ability to grasp and ability to feel/perceive the attributes of objects such as size shape temperature or texture.

Virology/Serology (VS) performs highly complex laboratory tests to identify infections with a variety of bacterial and viral pathogens of public health significance. The majority of reports generated by this Unit are used by state and local health officials in the diagnosis treatment surveillance and control of communicable disease. Virology/Serology is organized into four laboratory areas: Bacterial STD Serology Special Serology Viral Culture/Rabies
